I'm starting a new thread for Doors related music, movies, books, etc. so that others don't get clogged up with redundant posts about the same artist.

The Doors are a band I've been a fan of my entire life. They're also the reason I don't poke too much fun at modern record collectors who chase variants of particular albums. Although The Doors only put out eight proper studio albums (nine if you include An American Prayer), I've managed to pick up over 1000 different copies of those records over the past 40+ years of collecting music. Any format you can think of, it's in the collection somewhere: LPs, cassettes, 8-tracks, CDs, mini-discs, 7 inches, 10 inches, DVD, Blu-ray, flexi-singles, books, etc. Then there are the bootlegs, and solo projects. It just doesn't end. To say I'm a little obsessive about this band would be an understatement.

Anyway, this thread isn't my personal playground. I hope others will post their collections as well, and maybe we can compare different pressings or live shows.

The Doors - Feast Of Friends

Feast Of Friends is a documentary of sorts, made by The Doors in 1968 primarily with a crew of people Ray Mazarek and Jim Morrison went to UCLA film school with (including a very young Harrison Ford). This DVD marks the first time it has been officially presented in full other than a handful of showings at film festivals. The video has been nicely restored and cleaned up, and it looks fantastic. The sound is in either stereo or 5.1, and was remixed and remastered for this disc by The Doors long-time recording engineer Bruce Botnick.

This DVD also includes some bonus footage that was left over from the original cut in a section called "Feast Of Friends: Encore." Also on here is the 1968 British documentary "The Doors Are Open," where live performances from shows in London are intercut with footage of the political unrest that was shaking the foundations of the U.S. at the time. There is also a live performance of The End filmed in Toronto in August of 1967 for broadcast on Canadian TV, and some interviews with the surviving members of the band.

Easily one of my all time favorite classic rock bands and absolutely worthy of their own thread.

Speaking personally, Morrison made me fall in love with poetry when I was in high school which is likely something I never would have gotten into so early on without his music and lyrics. Personally I think they are one of the best bands of all time and frankly I like them much more than the Beatles and Zep whom they are often clumped with when one speaks of "the best classic rock groups."

I'm going camping with the wife and kids today and this topic has inspired me to bring along the Doors Greatest Hits. That's something my kids need to be more familiar with.

Side thought: Doors Greatest Hits, The Cure - Standing On A Beach, Cars Greatest Hits, Dylan's Greatest Hits, Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady, Tom Petty's Greatest Hits, Black Sabbath - We Sold Our Soul For Rock and Roll. ALL of those greatest hits / singles comps are absolute power house comps and cannot be improved upon by anyone period. I'm a big fan of making my own mixes when it comes to artist "best of" comps but I realize I cannot improve upon those listed above. Not only are the songs well selected and each worthy of the spot but they are compiled in an expert manor where each successive track complements the surrounding tracks perfectly. Rarely do I buy greatest hits comps but when they are that good, you're getting the best bang for the buck.

So back on topic, the Doors Greatest Hits is going in the fam van as we speak.

Gordon, I'm glad you posted this thread. I like the Doors a lot, but my collection is very small and simple. I have the six main albums on the '99 HDCD remasters and a couple other CD versions. For vinyl I just have a few of the Rhino reissues from a few years back. If money was no object I'd buy that box set of 45RPM reissues - I'm sure that sounds amazing. I have not waded into all the live stuff or even the album remixes but I'll get there eventually. I'll probably get a couple of the live issues next month.

I absolutely agree with you about that. I totally get why bands like the Beatles and Zeppelin are so popular, but something in The Doors music just speaks to me on a far more visceral level than those other two. Not that I don't like them, but for me personally, The Doors just don't ever get stale sounding.

Like you, I'm not a huge fan of comps or greatest hits, but there are exceptions to that and you listed a good deal of them right there.

To be perfectly honest about it, I have sometimes wished I kept my collection of The Doors that way. It's a chore doing the full-on obsessive collector thing, especially when I've had to move, pay for extra insurance premiums on this stuff, and tried to catalog everything. I have dozens, if not hundreds, of Doors releases that I have yet to get around to adding to the database on Discogs.

In the end, there was just something special about this band that made me fall in love with their music like no other. I have more releases in terms of sheer numbers from other artists (like the Grateful Dead or Miles Davis) than I do of The Doors, but these guys were the beginning of my love of rock music in general, and just touched a chord in me that no other artist has been able to match.
