Last night...

DJ Food - One Man's Weird is Another Man's World EP (Ninja Tune) LE 2011

^DJ Food has branched out bigtime for his last few releases, going into the almost psychedelic rock realm. Very thick gritty production and guitars on this. A great changeup for DJ Food.

DJ Food - Illectrik Hoax EP (Ninja Tune) LE RSD 2012

^I thought I was done finding RSD 2012 releases but I found this at DGA and jumped on it. In the same vein as the one above very thick rock on this.

Skinny Puppy - Mythmaker LP (Synthetic Symphony) 2007

^Heavy German industrial music on this. Unlike their late 80s and 90s work this is slower. Still very heavy music but are definitely on the cutting edge of electronics as well. Crazy sounds were coming out of my studio last night cuz of these records... My wife asked if I was going postal by listening to such angry music and I told her that it helps keep me from going postal.

Phil Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble LP (Honest Johns) 2012

Brand spanking new odd collaboration between the legendary Phil Cohran (of Sun Ra's Archestra or his own Artistic Heritage Ensemble) and the still fairly new but somehow simultaneously seasoned veterans of brass, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. "Wow" is all I can say about this. Wow.

Kelan Phil Cohran

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

You should cop this one.

Robocop - Original Soundtrack (Epic Records) 1987

^Sooo many potentially dope Hip Hop samples on this just waiting to be tapped like a keg. Great cover of this LP BTW, nice high gloss with inlayed silver and gold accents.

Onstage Majority - Onstage Majority LP (?) 1970s

Only one good song graces this corny album, and it is the reason I bought this album. The theme from Shaft was well done on this otherwise WTF moment album.

Last night a couple of new-to-me jems...

Flaming Lips - Once Beyond Hopelessness: The Original Christmas On Mars Film Score LP + 7” + DVD (Warner Brothers) 2008

^I’m beginning to think these guys don’t do anything half ass. The promo sticker on this is says “Destined to be a cult classic” – Rolling Stone, and they hit the nail right on the head. I wish I would have had this when I made my space mix cuz this has a few songs that would have been perfect. No vocals on this except for the typical movie soundtrack “Ahhhs” and sustained operatic screen dramatic effects chants. I love the 7”, I love the LP, haven’t seen the DVD of the movie but I’m sure it’s out there and over the top niceness.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here LP (Harvest) 1975

^Finally found a NM copy of this absolute must have Pink Floyd album. I’ve heard in on CD countless times years ago at friend's houses, but nothing compares to dropping a needle on this. Recorded at Abby Road studios, with some of the finest analogue production gear available in 1975, they were so honed with their sound at that time. For a millisecond I fell for their effect where it sounds like your record stylus was damaged and you could only hear the left channel on "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", but then I remembered it was just part of the song. Fan-friggen-tastic. That is to say nothing of the iconic cover, or my favorite song “Welcome to the Machine”. Side Note: I want to remake the “Welcome to the Machine” video with various snippets of the Borg footage from Star Trek TNG, that’d rock.
