Diamanda Galás - Saint Of The Pit
Mute/Restless Records, 1986

I thought the classical thread might be a good place for this one, since it's technically an opera album.

Galás recorded a trilogy of albums in the mid-80s with the theme of exploring the experience of those suffering from the still relatively newly understood AIDS virus that had descended like a plague on the western world. Her brother, playwright Philip-Dimitri Galás, died of the disease right around the time this album was released, so the project was deeply personal for her. Later, in 1989, she would be among those arrested at the ACT UP protest that took place in St. John's Cathedral demonstrating against Cardinal John O'Connor's opposition to AIDS education.

All three of the albums were issued independently as LPs (The Divine Punishment, Saint Of The Pit, and You Must Be Certain Of The Devil). Additionally, in 1988 Mute issued them together as a three-CD set under the title Masque Of The Red Death.

Great pick. She's definitely an acquired taste but has done some of the most extreme, uncompromising music I've ever heard. I've had one or two of her albums over the years but never fully got into her stuff. Maybe I'll give it another try when I can.

Ashley Bellouin - Ballads LP

I could've easily put this in the ambient/drone thread, but since Ms. Bellouin has a degree in music and appears to be approaches this stuff from more of a "high art" space, I thought it more appropriate to put it here instead.

Each side of the LP is one long track that builds using a variety of instruments such as harmonium, electronics, guitar, and cello. Rather than attempting to describe this in great detail, I'll just say it's a good record and that if you enjoy artists such as Terry Riley or Ellen Fullman you'll probably dig this.

That sounds great. Drawing Room looks like a label I need to spend some time checking out based on the stuff they have on Bandcamp.

Yeah, I'd like to hear more stuff from the label too. I'm following them on Bandcamp now.
