Just listening to this black/red K-Def again: definitely on par with the other recent K-Def output actually, though its still not touching that Redef Record Club joint. This 7" is another good example of K-Def's layered sampling ability, you almost don't realize how much is going on at times (or how seamlessly sounds come in and out of the track) unless you're really listening (and you seem the type to be really listening).
Both of the tracks on the first side are dope, slightly funky cuts (the second in particular). The B-Side is on some chilled-out, smoke sesh shit; there's a synth (or maybe organ?) on this track that reminds me of some West Coast 90's production, drums are nice on that one as well! Definitely a head-nodder.
Sometimes I'm not a huge fan of just listening to instrumentals but with someone like K-Def there's almost always progress, development and some sort of song structure instead of a straight loop that doesn't make it boring (I do listen to plenty of other instrumentals as well, I just can't with everything, even tracks that I loved when the MC was rhyming on it).
I actually haven't listened to Night Shift in full (late pass) so I can't compare it directly. The actual record is pretty dope and the red/black effect is nice but there's a haziness to the record that means its not straight "clean" (I think this has to do with the plastic packaging tbh), its a great sounding slice either way.
Overall I'm happy you reminded me of it and with the purchase, I'd cop again for whatever that's worth.
