Friday Night Slept on HH Albums #10

PHD - Without Warning LP (Tuff City) 1991



^So you got 2 monsters in this duo, the Poet, aka Blaq Poet, also from Screwball, one angry motherfucker on the mic, and you got DJ "Hot Day" Dante who besides being a dope DJ dropped some HIGHLY slept on beats back in the day.

On the classic Tuff City label, based out of Queens, this early meeting of the minds equated to the beginning of a full time gig for both of them, their best work yet to come, but the raw talent was there. It's basic, but effective and heavy boom bap beats, with the kind of samples that cost way too much money nowadays, and a realness factor that doesn't seem to exist in a lot of modern Hip Hop albums.

Yet here it is, for whatever reason not a lot of people talk about it. I think it's reluctantly slept on, like a ripe smelling air-mattress in a pup tent.

Ultimate Force - I'm Not Playin' LP (Traffic Entertainment) 2007



^So this early Diamond D project is dope. Super fat boom bap, way ahead of it's time for 1989, yet it got shelved for whatever reason. Then in 2007 good ol' Traffic Entertainment says, "Enough already, this is gonna get dropped so help us!" and presses were heated up, and pucks were pressed to nice, loud, and fat double LP records.

Yet people hit the snooze button on this and we all know it's better to just wake the fuck up.

Dr Who Dat? ‎– Beat Journey LP (Lex Records) 2006



^Time to drop a little love for an Instrumental Hip Hop album for a change... Brought to you by the good people at Lex Records and it shows, they even print artwork on the inside of their covers.



^But I don't buy records for the art, that's the nice bonus that sometimes comes with records. I buy wax for the music. Speaking of which, this is easily one of my favorite abstract strictly Hip Hop beats album. It's a little bit left, but there's still enough smart Boom Bap beats to keep you grounded on this slept on.

After this Dr Who Dat? AKA Jneiro Jarel dropped a flop of a MF Doom collab, JJ Doom, but that doesn't take away from the reason why DOOM recruited the guy for the collab in the first place, albums like this that represent an ability to drop smart beats that stand alone without the need for anyone to rhyme over them.
