Right now ..

John Lee Hooker - Travelin' lp
Picked this up on a trip to the bookstore with my wife . I'm not much of a book person , so I was Glad to see that Books-A-Million had a small vinyl section staring at me as soon as we walked in . They had some pretty good represses , but I this joint was calling my name . Electric blues is something I usually overlook , but I have really been coming around to it .This is a great album and well worth the cop !!! Got it for $10.99 !!!!

^Nice find man! You can find a few decent represses at BAM, I found a Can repress there one day.

But yeah, John Lee Hooker has one of the coolest singing voices in blues music ever. Him and Howling Wolf are right up their with the coolest grittiest voices.

Recently... (over the long 3 day kend)

Jimmy Smith - Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? LP (Verve) 1964

^Ever sleep on your own records? I don't even know how long I had this or where I got it from but I found it digging thru my Jazz records and gave it a whirl again. I vaguely remember not feeling it when I listened to it years ago but it was Sunday morning seemingly the right time for coffee and jazz. Immediately after cuing up the first track I remember why I didn't like it, as the first song is super soft, almost easy listening styled jazz. But I endured for a bit because I was distracted. By song two the hard bop came in and I was zoning in on it. By the end of the last song I was definitely kicking myself for not taking the time to enjoy this sooner. Not a ten by any means but a real solid hard bop album from a really great player. Jimmy Smith has got a lot of funky stuff too, IMO he's one dude not to be slept on.

Soft Machine - The Soft Machine (Volumes 1 & 2) 2LP (Command Records) 1973

^I already had the seminal Soft Machine Volume 2 when I bought this years ago but this gave me a chance to get the normally steeply priced volume one. For those who don't know this is some jazzy prog rock almost like a chilled out version of King Crimson. That's a broad statement and I'm sure Kevin Ayers (brainchild of the group) would despise that comparison but whatever, I rate both bands very highly and they are both British Progressive\Psychedelic\Fusion Rock, so close enough. Anywayz, yeah get this. While you are at it get Volume 3 too. You could keep on going, I think they have 8 or 9, but the first 3 is where it's at.

Beats & Pieces Volume 2 LP (BBE Records) 2001

^A favorite of compilation of mine for years now. All kinds of great artists from all genres are on this. It's copy\paste time instead of typing all that...

George Benson – El Barrio (MAW Mix) 7:16
Femi Kuti – Truth Don Die (Kerri Chandler Mix) 7:54
Afterglow – Jujazwarfare (Future Peace Mix) 5:07
Romanthony – Bring U Up 7:30
Alex Gopher – The Child (K-Dope Mix) 5:14
Children Of Planet Earth – Fly Away (Roy's Chi Town Dub) 4:54
Osunlade – Cantos A Ochun Et Oya 13:34
Bougie Soliterre – Got The Bug (Bettina's Mix) 8:35
Groove Collective – Everything Is Changing (Jay Denes Naked Edit) 5:30
Zero dB – Come Party 7:37
Carl Craig – People Make The World Go Round (Slum Village Mix) 4:10
Pépé Bradock – Peer Pressure 4:54
Pete Rock – Walk On By 4:38
Bahamadia – One-4-Teen (Funky For You) 3:27
Handsome Boy Modeling School – The Truth 5:37
Tito Puente – On The Street Where You Live 3:09
Incognito – Fearless 6:14
Pharoah Sanders – You've Got To Have Freedom 6:50
Bel Air Project – Dark Jazzor 6:25
Blissom & Merkin – Tag Team Triangle

So yeah, lots of great names but the absolute highlight of this is Carl Craig's - People Make the World Go Round (Slum Village Remix). This is one of the dopest Hip Hop styled R&B remixes by Dilla I have ever heard. Dilla put his absolute best beats on this and it's goosebumps good. I'm talking real frisson.

Death - For The Whole World To See LP (Drag City) 2009

Uptownkid turned me on to this 70s punk band from Detroit that I knew nothing of. Now, since I got this, this has been on daily rotation for a week. Apparently, these guys recorded this in 1975 and never released it due to "record company strife" Admittedly, that's an over simplification, watch the 2 minute Trailer for the upcoming documentary "A Band Called Death" below...

...but FIRST just listen to how dope this guitarist and drummer are right here.

Death - Keep On Knocking

^That drummer is one of the tightest most precise punk drummers I have ever heard. Like Clyde Stubblefield tight.
Edit: Sorry not the best sounding youtube recording but you get the drift.
