These are a few of the goods I scored from Christmas through New Years, some of my favs anyways...
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness 4LP (Virgin) (2012 US Remaster) Originally released in 1995
^Probably the best extremely over the top packaging I have ever seen on vinyl. The box is as heavy as a cement block. The liner notes and artwork are outstanding. The lyrics for each song are printed on a thick "natural" paper book. The artwork book is the equivalent of a coffee table book. The 4 LPs are 180 gram remasters, and they come packaged in audiophile protection plastic inner sleeves next to the original heavy paper inner sleeves and then each pair of sleeves has it's own elaborate outer jacket. Opening each LP is like opening a present.
I bought this for myself as a Christmas gift for a hefty 80 bones. I'd say it was worth every penny for what I got. Billy Corgan was very thoughtful about the whole package when he designed and re-released this double album. Song for song this is not as good as Siamese Dream, but as an double album there are some undeniably great tunes on each disc. Highly recommended for SP fans, and it is getting harder and harder to get this so cross it off your list now if you are a serious buyer.
Brian Eno - Lux LP (Warp) 2012
^Only recommended for Eno completionists. If you like his seminal Ambient series, consider this an addition to that. File Under: Uber-chill, beat-less, non linear background music for the elevators of your dreams. Great work music. This first pressing comes with 4 slightly smaller than record sized limited ed. art prints that will eventually grace the front wall of my studio.
Devo - Sing If You Are Glad To Be Devo LP (The Amazing Kornyphone Record Label) Unofficial Bootleg 1978
Probably the best Devo record I ever heard, crazy stuff. I can't believe it's a bootleg. So much good early Devo obscurities on this and, oh good, another Devo poster for my collection! Too bad I don't have any wall space to hang these goofy posters, they are so humorous, and who doesn't need a good laugh once in a while.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - The Singles Collection 15 X 7" Box Set (Fantasy) 2009
^Man who doesn't like these guys? You can go into any bar in America, drop a buck in a jukebox, pick any CCR song and the whole tavern clientele will suddenly liven up. Not saying it's only for barflys, on the contrary, anyone, any age will stop and recognize the classics. Pressed up on fat 45, mono and faithfully reproduced all the now impossible to find original 45 sleeves. Another gift for myself, this one was a steal of a deal at only 45 bucks for 15 mono 45s (that's a buck and a half per song) of every good song they ever dropped. No brainer niceness, I had to jump on it. Never heard em sound quite so good as these mono 45s.
John Carpenter & Alan Howarth - Escape From New York Original Soundtrack LP (Death Waltz Recording Company) 2012 Import
^I have tried buying this original soundtrack numerous times throughout the last few years. After catching the flick on Netflix years ago, I knew I had to put it on my wish list. Spacy 80s experimental synth type ish, very ahead of it's time and extremely interesting music. Like I said, I tried to buy the original soundtrack, but every time I put it in my online cart, (literally 3 or 4 times this happened) I got the "sold out" notice email. So I figured it was never meant to be and I bit the bullet and purchased this very nice import. As you can see by their little write up on the recording, it's got the artists' stamp of approval on it so the absorbent money I spent on this import at least went into the right hands. Besides an amazing soundtrack this has a nice poster that I'll never be able to hang up.
Antonio Carlos Jobim \ Ray Brown Orchestra – The Adventurers Soundtrack LP (Symbolic) 1970
^Another must have soundtrack crossed off my hit list, courtesy of my man Jay Brown! Thanks JB!! Fantastic thick soundtrack from the early 70s. It's all over the map in terms of genres and styles, but it's predominantly funky jazz oriented music on this. Lot's of funk tracks, and great untapped samples throughout. Quite nice, now I understand why this is so sought.
