Darrell Banks - The Lost Soul CD (Goldmine Soul Supply)

Detroit soul singer whose career was cut short in a tragic death. During his time, he released one LP on Atco and another on Stax. I believe this CD is a comp of both those LPs with some extra tracks. One thing I will say about this is that when I bought it several years back I was a bit annoyed to discover it was actually a CD-R. Goldmine appears to be some kind of grey area outfit as well. On the plus side, in the years since I bought this, much of this material has been reissued through what would appear to be more legit channels. I just haven't gotten around to buying any of those reissues yet. Soul Collectors are going to want old pressings of those LPs though, which aren't insanely expensive but not really super affordable either.

Anyway, worth checking out.

Wilson Pickett - It's Too Late

1963 - Double-L Records USA (Mono)

Wilson Pickett's sole release on Lloyd Price's Double-L Records, released a year or two before he joined Atlantic and started churning out classic after classic. Many of the songs on this record have R&B and Doo Wop style arrangements rather than his later deep soul style. While the later Fame sides are in a different class from this collection, still worth a listen for Pickett's electric vocals.

^Have definitely never seen that. I always see Atlantic-era Pickett stuff (trashed of course) while digging through the used bins though. I do like Pickett but I'm hardly any kind of expert on him. I have one later era Atlantic LP that is considered one of his last classics and a 2xCD anthology. Rhino Handmade had a CD box set of the complete Atlantic stuff that I meant to get but never got around too.

Otis Clay - I Can't Take It LP

Deep 70s Southern Soul originally released on Hi Records, the label famous for putting out LPs by Al Green. Otis Clay's voice is a bit rougher and more shouty than Green's but if you like Southern Soul, you'll like this. This pressing is the reissue on Fat Possum. I know these don't have the best reputation out there, so if you come across an old 70s pressing in great shape for a good price, you'd probably want to choose that over this one. I grabbed this on clearance awhile back, so it serves as a placeholder until I can acquire a better pressing.

^^Otis Clay and Wilson Picket... 2 incredible musicians that were considered legendary in both Soul and Blues music.
