We can't forget about Funk.

Sure some of this will overlap with soul and other genres, but all music overlaps at some point, so Funk deserves it's own thread too.

Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra ‎– Pulsion LP (Ubiquity) 2014

^A thoughtful B-day gift from JB arrived last month and I've bumped this at least 4 times since it landed. That's one of the great bonuses of this place, you guys have good ears for picking out gifts. And what goes around comes around, as his birthday is just around the corner.

I guess I could have put this under soul as well but it's funky too and this thread looked lonely and unloved. I could have also put it under sound library music as well because that is kind of what it reminds me of in a way. The slightly changing themed moods on this are reminiscent of a good library record to my ears although technically it's a funk /soul record.

I knew nothing of this band but I've learned they are loaded with players of all kinds of instruments. So Orchestra isn't an exaggeration at all. Although I'm sure I've never heard any orchestra this funky except maybe older orchestral arrangements the likes of Bob James or David Axelrod.

Their title track Pulsion has a 70s haunting soundtrack Jazz vibe, checkit...

That track is sounding pretty damn good. Would probably appeal to some fans of 70s jazz as well. Had no idea Ubiquity was doing stuff like this these days. Several years back I think they were doing mostly house and downtempo records. One of their releases was Theo Parrish's second full length...

^Exactly. They have diversified quite a bit over the years, but I was buying their records for their house music back in the day.

Unrelated, house has fizzled overall since Y2K and I think as a genre specialist Ubiquity recognized they either had to adapt or die.

There's a lot of great labels that die because they pigeonhole themselves into a niche that falls off the map and they hang on stubbornly till the bitter end to that sound. Like disco and all other club genres, there will always be die-hard fans keeping it alive. But especially in comparison to yesteryear, house wax isn't exactly flying off the shelves. I think it's respectable that Ubiquity saw this coming and branched out without really compromising anything or losing their signature organic sound.

^Agree with you about labels needing to change with the times to stay relevant. A lot of the longest running indie labels did just that. Re: house or any type of dance music, that stuff was never destined for long-term popularity even on an underground level in the U.S. It has always been more of a UK/European thing, even Americans that do that stuff end up playing over there way more over the course of their careers. Here it just hits little blips where it's trendy or whatever, then gets pushed out by the next trend.
