Wargasm - Why Play Around

Underrated 80s thrash metal from Boston. The best thing about this band is the riffs, which should be the focus of most heavy metal related bands IMHO. I first heard about this band from a mixtape of old metal stuff around 20 years ago but just got around to picking this up now. I ordered the cassette because it was basically the same price as the digital album and the CD version was sold out. Since I bought it through Bandcamp it came with a FLAC download. If you like 80s thrash, check this album out.

That's some good old fashioned kick-in-the-head thrash! For a three piece band they make a big sound. I'll definitely be on the lookout for that.

Razor - Violent Restitution CD

Razor were an 80s/90s thrash metal band from Canada that, as far as I know, never made it big outside of their home country. Today they have a cult following among heavy metal fans, which is how I found out about them. Early on the band sounded a bit like Motorhead meets Judas Priest and tried a few different things until arriving at this, their fifth album, which is one of their most popular releases. By 1988 a lot of thrash bands were starting to incorporate things like melody, technical songwriting, etc. but you don't get much of that here. This is a very raw, no frills take on 80s thrash.

Relapse has reissued this album with a typical compressed/loudness war remastering job. Thankfully, SPV in Germany still sells an unbutchered version through mainstream distribution channels. The SPV version is almost twice as dynamic as the Relapse version. You'll need to turn up your volume control on it, just like a lot of older metal CDs. I'll take that any day over a shitty, overcompressed hack job though.
