(long overdue catching up here)
DJ Shadow - What Does Your Soul Look Like Pt.1 Remix 12" (Mo Wax) 1997
^Shadow completionism going on here. I guess I coulda put this in the Non-Hip Hop thread since it's strictly Drum and Bass remixes and not really Hip Hop but not splitting hairs. This is actually pretty good remixes especially the DJ Die remix.
DJ Spinna - Compositions 1 LP (Not on Label) 1996
^see below...
DJ Spinna - Compositions 3 LP (Female Fun Records) 2005
^I got parts 1 and 3. No number 2 though. In a nutshell these are super dope Hip Hop instrumentals that are repeat listen worthy. There are some cats that know how to make beats that are so dope they stand on their own without any rappers, this is one of those cats. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for my missing part 2 for sure.
UGK - Int'l Players Anthem 12" (Jive) 2007
^More completionism. I gotta get every single UGK 12" there is. Slowly but surely I am making this happen. This later period one with Outkast is a seriously dope single. The minimal cinematic beat is unbeatable.
Ghetto Boys - You Ain't Nothing 12" (Rap-A-Lot) 1987
^Pre dropped "h" Ghetto Boys 12". Ready Red did the heavy lifting on this and really his beats are what saved this otherwise average sounding Hip Hop 12".
Geto Boys - Do It Like A G.O. 12" (Rap-A-Lot\Def American) 1990
^My all time favorite Geto Boys 12" (well besides the obvious My Mind's Playing Tricks On Me) One of the last twelves featuring Red and he goes out on top with some of his dopest beats. All the tracks on this are dope.
Ghetto Dawgz - Ghetto Dawgz EP (Now & Forever) 1998
^Very generic looking random rap with some seriously dope heavy beats. One of those singles where you wish they didn't bother with the R&B diva singing the hook. It's so dark sounding and when the female vocalist comes in she "brightens it up" a little too much. The best songs on this are the ones without any singing. Well worth seeking this obscurity.
Mr Melody - Funk Motor 12" (On the Rap Side) 1989
^Another obscurity on a very obscure label. This one makes great use of JB's Funky Drummer sample.
M.C. Watchout & D.J. Oz – Blind Man's Bluff / My Tom Tom 12" (Body Rock) 1987
^Blind man's bluff is wack. My Tom Tom is dope. Great drum machine programming with emphasis on the toms for a change.
MC Gator C - Just Kickin' Science 12" (Underwood Records) 1990
^Bought this miami bass gem at Strictly Discs in Madison a while back. This is
THEE DOPEST MIAMI BASS SONG I EVER HEARD. No joke, whoever this guy is he took "Blinded me with Science" and flipped it in the dopest possible way. I see this single is up for sale right now at Discogs by one lone seller selling it for a mere 14$. This is so dope I'd easily pay twice that much without batting an eyelash.
Positive K - Quarter Gram Pam 12" (Test Press) 1987
^I don't know how many of the remaining OSHH heads remember a cool cat named MP. One day he shipped me this and a bunch of super dope test presses like it for hooking him up over the years with various mixes and DVDs. It was a great surprise and I'll never forget that gesture. I wonder what happened to him, I'd love to see him join up here. But besides that personal stuff, if you don't already know, this is really dope early Positive K. Test press or not, this one is worth seeking.
Tha Mexakinz – Zig Zag LP (Mad Sounds) 1994
^One of the best slept on random rap LPs I have from 1994. I can't believe how dope these guys are. They sound a lot like Funkdoobiest production wise, with that heavy Latin influenced rhyme style. I plucked this out of my big buy pile at Metrowax recently and have been bumping it non stop ever since. I spent 8$ on this, it was a steal of a deal for the quality music.
