Revisiting one of the better releases of April in Illogic & Blockhead's album "Capture The Sun." If you like Blockhead's layered production and Illogic's poetic delivery this album is untouchable. So solid all the way through. Heady, heady lyricism that makes you lean in closer. Talked to the guys the other day on the phone for an interview and it was one of the few times that speaking with an artist reinforced my enjoying their music, both are well-spoken and passionate about their art...it shows. [Note: no vinyl as of now]

I was worried as it had kind of a boring into to it but progressively this album got better and better with each track. If it was you G, good recommendation, it's definitely a quality conscious-style album.

Not sure it was me on the def jef recommendation, but it might have been. Don't think I ever said it was great, but it is a quality album. I probably haven't listened to it since I recommended it though, so I'll have to go back and see what I was talking about

As far as listentning goes I've been on a gap-filling mission lately, I picked up a couple of albums and 12" from the past 15 or so years I never heard in their entirety or didn't know the b-sides:

AZ - The format
Paris - Sonic Jihad
Scarface - The last of a dying breed
Rappin 4-tay - Dont't fight the feeling
Just Ice - Gangstas don't cry/Just rhyming with kane
Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz - Deja vu/Marmelade
Alkaholiks - Flute song/Party ya ass off

Gotta say I was dissapointed byt the scarface joint. It wasn't bad but it was nothing special. Sonic Jihad was uneven switching between dopeness and boredom. Also suprised by how "I'll be around" sounded like nothing else on 4-tays album. It turned out to be a pleasent suprise though, that album was pretty good. "The format" was quality, I will be going back to this.

As for the 12" Just Ice was average, I prefer the Hisstory/Loverap 12" he dropped around the same time. Deja vu should've been a vocal b/w instrumental and nothing more. The alkaholiks joint I bought for the a-side but I will probably be bumping the b-side more. Dopeness on both sides.

Also picked up Only built 4 cuban linx part 2, which I haven't listened to yet but will later on today. Heard one or two joints off it when it came out and been hearing good things about it.

Finally I picked up an album I should've had long ago: PRT - Pure Poverty. And it's even better than I remembered. Easy star!

Beatnuts - Hot 12" Promo (Penalty Recordings) 2004



^In a nutshell, this collection I'm borrowing from is loaded with Hip Hop like this. Some of it great, some so-so, some of it wack. Most of it in great shape, and because it was from an A-List DJ much of it was promo only! NICE!!! As many of you already know, a lot of the radio friendly tracks on 12" promos like this can be better than the dirty version because the artist wanted it to thump on the radio so they could sell albums. SO DON'T SLEEP ON THE CLEAN VERSIONS!

The Beatnuts are almost a no brainer in my book. If I don't already have it I'll definitely cop it especially when it's as hot as the title track says it is. Let's move this from the "borrow stack" to the "buy stack". JOE-BUY STACK!



J-Love & Masta Ace ‎- NFL (Not For Long) / Warfare 12" Promo (Replay Records) 1999



^I like both of these guys, but I don't like this. Wade from Metrowax can list this for sale cuz I don't want it. JOE-REJECT STACK!



Craig G - Say What Ya Want 12" Promo (D&D Records) 2002



^Like I said, lots of promos in this collection, and tons of stuff from D&D studios which is normally a good thing. Craig G early stuff = dope. This = wack. REJECT STACK.



DAS EFX - If Only 12" Promo (Eastwest Records) 1993



^So I got the album on wax already, do I need the promo 12" too? HELL YEAH I do! This is in perfect shape, way louder, it has way more bass on this sparsely grooved 12", and it's way more convenient for mixing. JOE-BUY STACK!



Living Legends - Brand New 12" Promo (Up Above) 2005 and Various -The Konnectid Project 12" Promo (Private I Records) 2000



^The B-Side on this 12" is so dope. Great beat, solid rhymes. This one-off DJ Quik side project "Konnectid Project" has the very dope track "Hotel, Motel" So, for both of these... JOE-BUY!



Kreators - Foreign Lands 12" (Bomb Hip Hop Records) 1999



^Bomb Hip Hop doesn't make just A.D.D. inducing turntablist music, but it also has some decent UGHH in it's archives. This one is actually pretty good, especially the flip. JOE-BUY!



Ed O.G & Da Bulldogs ‎– Love Comes And Goes 12" Test Pressing (Chemistry/Mercury) 1994



^NA-NA-NA-NIIICCEEE!!! Edo G test press that's not on discogs for an album that never really got a proper vinyl release besides the promo 2LP. I guess something went wrong with the label head that day. I pretty much have to have everything from this guy as he's easily in my all time greatest top 5 list. Unless Metrowax prices this way to high you can bet your ass that this will be in the JOE-BUY!



Devin The Dude ‎- Seriously Trippin EP (Green Streets Entertainment) 2012



^Not from this DJ's collection, but I did just buy it from metrowax. It was priced to move and after I peeped some of the songs on youtube I knew I had to get it. Devin does a lot of R&Bish singing on this and he's pretty smooth! I'd say JOE-BUY, but JOE BOUGHT so whatevs.



Civilized Savages & Armageddon Bodies - New Ruff Flava LP (Armageddon Records) 1994



^WAY underground, super dope. See a lot of the stuff in this collection was crazy rare shit I never heard of before but am now getting time to appreciate. This one is seriously cool, nice beats, and is indie as all hell. If I get a fair price on this I gotta put this in the JOE-BUY!


Concise Kilgore - LSR Music 12" Promo (White Label\Netweight Records) 2002



^Speaking of way underground, file this under WAY, WAY underground. The artist put his own handwriting on this and he probably sold this shit out of his trunk. Eventually I'm sure he was glad as hell to get this in the hands of DJ B-Mello, the original owner of this collection. This one is so cool and so underground. One of those guys that didn't have the money or industry backing even though he had the skills and beats. There are actually a staggering amount of records like this that are essentially "fell thru the cracks" guys or "sign my ass now please!" guys. I need to borrow a lot more like this. As long as this isn't priced like a long-lost grail, this is going right to the top of the JOE-BUY!!!
