^Classic stuff.
anywayz...
It's catch up time, I've been so busy with work that I haven't had a moment to even breathe lately until today so bear with the long list..
recently...
Digable Planets - Beyond The Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles LP (Blue Note) 2005
^Fantastic comp issued by jazz giant Blue Note records back in 2005. I bought this when it came out because at the time their 2 albums were pretty hard to find on wax. Now I see there is an official vinyl reissue of Blowout Comb. Anywayz this comp is basically a best of plus a few slept on Digable joints all remastered on HQ 180 gram double LP by the mastering masters at Blue Note. The sound quality on this is impeccable. Busted this out recently when I was jonezin' for a laid back jazzy Hip Hop vibe.
Borrow pile continued... (My records I am borrowing from
the big dig)
Artifacts - Dynamite Soul 12" (Big Beat) 1995
^Great remix on this. Two tracks make this single worth copping. The beats are dope, the rhymes dope... Joe buy pile!
Asheru Featuring Talib Kweli – Mood Swing / Soon Come 12" (Seven Heads) 2002
^Man, this TK collab is the joint here. I could care less about the remixes. I've had the "Soon Come" album on CD for years, a fantastic underground album. I forgot about this track, gotta get it. Joe buy!
Biz Markie – Let Me Turn You On Promo 12" (Cold Chillin') 1993
^I'd hate to say anything about this guy that isn't good, I love his style, but I definitely gotta pass on this. It's his signature slightly-off key singing style that works sometimes, but other times not so much. On this track he's singing over a disco beat and it just doesn't work for him. I can't see myself ever playing this more than once. Pass!
M.C. Cool Rock & M.C. Chaszy Chess – Boot The Booty LP (Vision Records) 1988
^I'm in the process of mixing up a electro mix right now and this has some serious contenders for that mix on it. All I gotta say about this album is...
"Boot! Da Booty, Boot Boot Da Boot-tay!" Joe Buy!
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien – Phoney Phranchise 12" (Hiero Imperium) 1999
^I'm really really picky about what I buy from this guy, especially his later stuff when he got to that later period of his career where he just constantly sucked as a rapper. I think when this came out he just started to reach that period, you know what I'm talking about, the whole "snotty" rap sarcastic style that he still does to this day. I just can't get with most of his stuff any more, it's snot rap. This one isn't that though, there's a few usable joints on this 12 so I gotta put it in the Joe buy pile.
daKah Hip Hop Orchestra – The Missing 12 Inch 12" Promo (Scion Records) 2005
^NICE ONE!!! The big dig reveals a few really special joints that are promo only that shoulda gotten a proper release like this one. The marketers at Scion cars spent tons of money on making all kinds of Hip Hop records and mixes for their marketing campaign and this one has got to be one of the more interesting ones. A full orchestra, oboes and all, playing Hip Hop instrumentals. This is one of those, could-be-bad, could-be-good concepts, and it ended up working perfectly. The first side is a Roots mega mix, all continuously mixed (or composed I guess would be more accurate) instrumentals. The second side is a Gang Starr\GURU Jazzmatazz mega mix. DAMN!!! Imagine Gangstar's best instrumentals ever made continuously served up by a live orchestra that truly understands the nuances. GURU himself was on board for the rhymes on the last track. I'm still blown away by how this is as good as anyone would ever hope it would be. Absolutely, positively, JOE BUY PILE!
