Francois De Roubaix

Vol. 1

This one gets gangster, gun shots included

Vol. 2

Vol. 3

This one is his more experimental side, full of avant electronics and drum machines.

Jerry-O – Funky Football 7” (Wand) 1970

^Finally got my hands on this funky 45 about football I heard a long time ago. This one is uber funky and easilly my favorite from Jerry-O.

Blah, blah, blah... just listen...

JJ Johnson and Nat Adderley – The Yokohama Concert Live LP (Pablo Live) 1978

^I'm a big fan of both of these legends so I picked up this later period live concert cheap and it's surprisingly funky. It's about half bee bop and half funky fusion. Much better than I thought it would be at the nice price of 4$.

OST – Hugo Montenegro - Lady in Cement LP (20th Century Fox Records) 1968

^Not hard to find but hard to not love this is a great groovy sixties soundtrack. It's not corny groovy, it's just groovy man. This one should have been in my soundtrack section long ago.

OST – Dave Grusin – 3 Days of the Condor LP (Capitol Records) 1975

^This one also should have been in my Soundtrack section the difference in price is what kept it out of there till recently. I finally found it at the lowest price I've ever seen it @ $48 and I jumped because I've been trying to find it for years. This one is a special soundtrack and a deep diggers dream. Some of the funkiest work I've ever heard from Grusin, it's almost like a blaxploitation soundtrack but it's clearly not a blaxploitation movie. It just has the funky wah wah pedal that gives it that association. Great stuff, keep your eyes peeled for this OST. I put this right up there on a pedestal with the Adventurers soundtrack.

OST – Various - Better Off Dead LP (A&M Records) 1985

^DOPE HTF 80s synth pop soundtrack. There's 2 great songs the rest, ehh. But the two good ones make it worth seeking...

....This slow 80s ballad is the reason I love this song, it's just so strangely cool for a love song...

Karl Hector & The Malcouns – Coomassi EP (Now-Again) 2014

^Finally completed my KH trilogy of limited EPs and like the other 2 before it this is as cool as it looks. Silk screened print on recycled cardboard covers, and blistering with afro funk. This one is still around and it's promised to not be reissued and if you spot it, cop it. Guaranteed to spice up your funk section.

Karl Hector & The Malcouns – Ngunga Yeti Fofa EP 2013 (<bot center) Sahara Swing LP (2008) (<top center) and Tamanrasset EP (2011) (<right) (Now-Again)

^Just showing off a little but I am very proud to have all of these, not one of them has filler, and for funk, that's friggen fantastic.

Heliocentrics and Gaslamp Killer - Helio x GLK EP (Now-Again) 2013

^Completionism artist, I have to have everything with the Helios on it. I can't describe why I love them so much. Maybe it's cuz they harken back to Sun Ra only with a funk influence, maybe it's cuz they are really way out there wierd, I donno. I just know that for me, seeing their albums = buying their albums. So far they haven't let me down and this is no exception. It's kind of hard for me to hear who produced what since this is a "versus" style EP but it doesn't matter it's "journey music" and that's why I buy their shit.

Various – Michigan Meltdown 2 LP (Coney Dog Records) 2013

^Really cool garage rock on this strictly Michigan rock comp. So much interesting niches here but most of it is just raw rock and a little bit of psych. I really want every regional rock comp in America, especially if it's regional punk comps but that's a tall-ass order.

Various – Desert Rats With Baseball Bats II LP (Allegro) 2014

^Dope Vegas punk comp of all newer artists from the desert. What I like about this is how it could have just as easily been made in 1985, it has that 80s punk sound without sounding like a recycled concept.

Skinny Puppy – Mind the Perpetual Intercourse LP (Nettwerk) 1986 and Halo of Flies – F.T.W 7” + CD-R (Amphetamine Reptile Records) 2007

^Skinny Puppy is another band I gotta get just about everything from. They are one of my all time favorite industrial rock bands. Hell, even Guru from Gangstarr loved these guys and did a dope remix for them. I rank these guys right up there with KMFDM, early NIN, and Cop Shoot Cop. Halo of Flies is a modern punk band and because they are punk they can get away with packaging a CD-R and throwing it in their 7" singles. File under super hard gristle voice screaming grungy punk.

Nip Drivers – Oh Blessed Freak Show (Enigma Records) 1985

^Took a chance on this punk album and it was a wise choice. Really nice and thick production on this oddball record. Very funny (in a sick kinda way) skits are peppered throughout... and yeah, you gotta love their name.

Modern Vending - One Bad Peccary LP (Ajax Records) 1990

^Like the record above this is fantastic punk\rock. And, like the album above, it's hard to describe. So I won't even try. ((nocomment))

Pennywise – Unknown Road LP (Epitaph) 2014 RE of 1993 OG

^Nice reissue of this classic punk (almost punk pop) album. I've been looking for the original for a while and when I saw they reissued it I didn't waste a minute making the move.

DJ Krust – Warhead (Steppa Mix) 12” (V Recordings) 1997

^Now it's time to get into the Drum and Bass vein. How do you describe a dope ass bass heavy anthem like this? It's pretty hard to do. I'd post a video of it and even that would give you a slightly better idea of how cool this is but computer speakers and Youtube streaming will not even touch how loud and heavy this really sounds. When I drop a needle on this and the first 25 second long bass sustain hits in my studio it causes all my body hair to stand up and my heart to murmur. It's a guilty pleasure song in a way not too different from the bass music that came out in the 90s but this is a lot more intellectual than junk in the trunk bass mixes.

Found it in the US on Discogs (which is amazing to me cuz this is easy to find in the UK but no where else) and the seller had a nice selection of D&B so I might have just discovered my new go-to drum and bass seller. I bought this one I've sought for years along with the following 2 records...

Dillinja / Lemon D ‎– Violent Killa / 12.01 12” (Valve Recordings) 1997

^I like both of these artists, so I took a chance on this split 12", but this is pretty average. I plan on doing a D&B mix some day and this one won't make the cut.

Ryuichi Sakamoto – Anger /Grief 12” (Ninja Tune) 1998

^An interesting one-off for Ninja Tune and the track Anger is some micro produced Drum and Bass\Jungle niceness. A cheap no-brainer for my slowly growing Ninja collection.

^^I checked out those Karl Hector & The Malcouns records. Definately quality stuff. Some of it is too jazzy for my taste but I'm gonna keep an eye out for those. As for Skinny Puppy, always liekd them but rarely in the mood to listen to them, which is why I limited my sight to the album "Bites", which I like the best. Still haven't picked it up though...

I'm still on the Pakistan tip, after the latest recommendations, I picked up this one:

Hard to pick a favorite as most of it is really good, so here's a random joint:

Discovered this German funk band which has some really good stuff out. Check out this remake of The Messag:

The Mighty Mocambos - The Next Message

Picked up Ikebe Shakedown's sophomore album. Reminds me of the Budos Band's 3rd lp, which means it's really good.

Ikebe Shakeodwn - The Offereing

Finally came across a compilation of a group called Muyei Power from Sierra Leone. Highly recommended, some funk influences and some heave tribal drums on this lp.

Muyei Power - Bi Loko
