Right now...

Boston Symphony Orchestra - Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, In E Minor, Op. 64 LP (RCA Victor) 1958

^There's nothing like starting a Sunday morning with a little black coffee and then switching over to a nice pale ale immediately thereafter all while listening to a super clean Mono "RCA Red Seal" copy of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5.

Do you ever read the back of these albums? I'll admit, most of the time I don't, but this time I did because this music kinda subconsciously forces you to think differently, a little deeper, and it seemingly makes you feel more "studious".

Anyways, I'll type up one thing it says that really caught my eye.

Quote
Charles O'Connell

Many sensitive people, many artists and some scientists believe in the existence of a human faculty which they call "synaesthesia," by which the sensory impression caused by one stimulus --- let us say, color --- is duplicated by and associated with the impression caused by another --- sound, for instance. Rimsky-Korsakoff, a master of orchestration, and Alexander Scriabin, musician and mystic, independently worked out a scale of colors which to them represented tonalities. While its validity may be questioned, it's aptness with respect to the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies of Tchaikovsky is striking; so are the disagreements of the two:

  • Symphony No. 4 - Rimsky-Korsakoff chose Green whereas Scriabin chose Red
  • Symphony No. 5 - Rimsky-Korsakoff chose Blue and Scriabin chose Bluish-white
  • Symphony No. 6 - Rimsky-Korsakoff chose Somber, purplish-blue and Scriabin chose Purple-violet

Whatever the "color" of Tchaikovsky's music, whether we see with our ears or hear with our eyes, there can be no denying the infinite variety, richness and tonal loveliness he sets before us.

^That right there is some serious yoda shit.

(flipping the record, pressing start)

Weissenberg - Schumann Symphonic Études op. 13 \ Liszt Three Sonetti Del Petrarca LP (Connoisseur Society / EMI) 1976

^Right now I'm diving into one of my favorite classical records I own. Notice I put it in a Mo-Fi sleeve. This one is guaranteed frisson every listen. Look how pimp dude looks. He punishes the piano at moments, coaxing the keys, then he rolls off into a barely audible flutter. Absolutely stunning. I truly love this record. I would do anything to be able to play piano even half as good as this guy.

Soft Machine - Third LP (Columbia) 1970

^One of my favorite fusion albums from this group. This album has an ingenious progression from side to side, one side means nothing, the point isn't clear until you hear all four sides. Tracks blend together so you forget where you are. By side four you realize track names mean nothing, it's all about the entire piece.

Side thought: I think ring wear can be pretty cool. nerd I know it's nerdy, but really, I have no problem whatsoever with ring wear when it looks as cool as that. I think it adds character, but for whatever reason records with dinged corners bother me, go figure.

Every time you buy this album used you will see ring wear, it's just one of those albums that with 2 fat records in this gatefold it will always have ring wear by the nature of the design. That would only be a problem for me if I was selling it and this record would never make my to-sell list.

Some cool picks Rchecka. I need to pull out some of my classical records soon. I really enjoy classical music when I'm in the mood, certain composers anyway. I've actually never heard that Soft Machine records if you can believe that, never went beyond their first couple psychedelic pop type records.

Re: ring wear, never an issue for me really unless the seller is asking too much for the record. I care far more about what's inside. I also agree that double LPs with thin standard covers often yield ring wear. No big deal.
