I avoided From Ashes for years until about 5 years ago. I think bitd they got tagged unfairly as a His Hero ripoff so I avoided them.

^Good plugs X2.Rock On

...and on the opposite sound spectrum...

...

Right now João

João Gilberto - João Gilberto LP (Phillips) 1961

^Don't you just love it when you get records from a half a planet away? How this ended up in my home town in this condition is beyond comprehension. Nice, lush, almost flawless sounding mono pressing from Phillips of Brazil. Most know his voice and guitar from the Girl from Ipanema. This acoustic album is a significant piece along the same realm as that only more introspective. Rich organic acoustic lounge vibes from the height of the 60s Brazil peak.

I need some Joao for sure. I've tried to buy his albums, as the more popular ones on Verve do occasionally show up, but they are always badly scratched when I do see them.

^I know what you mean, I was surprised to find this in such great shape myself. One of those, "Once in a while the sun's gotta shine even on a dog's ass" moments.

Right now...

Barry Adamson - Moss Side Story LP (Mute Records) 1989

^One of my all time favorite Barry Adamson albums, and I'm a bit of a completionist so that says a lot. I have every solo album he dropped, a few on both CD and vinyl.

For those who don't know Barry, In a very general nutshell, this guy makes a lot of imaginary soundtracks. Albums that sound like they should accompany a movie that doesn't really exist.

This one from 1989 is one of his darkest albums. Yet like all good soundtracks it has it's happy scenes songs, jazzy smokey spy in a club songs, the horror of death crescendos, the "character realization" scenes, the car chase moments, the funeral moments, etc.

All of this music conjures the movie in your head as you listen to the album. When an artist can create that vibe, and mental imagery just thru his music, to me at least, that's a special artist.

TLDR: His music plants movies in your head. That's a unique skill set so yeah, I'm a big fan.

Right now...

The Heliocentrics - 13 Degrees of Reality LP (Now Again) 2013

^Bold but true statement... this abstract funk band is the best band that ever graced Now Again Records (Egon's child label of Stones Throw). Loaded with spacy samples, progressive live based instrumentation funk, and slow chugging funky vibes, there is no funk band who even touches their eccentric but palatable style.

Honestly, I'm not sure if this is as good as their impressive debut, but after multiple listens it's become an acquired taste favorite of mine.
