Some stuff I've been listening to recently:

Dwight Yoakam - Original Album Series

This guy was a breath of fresh air for country music in the 80s and 90s. I liked him back then, but never had anything by him until recently. This budget CD set has his first five albums, and they're all pretty great. Hardly a bad song in the bunch, just as much rockabilly flavor going on as Buck Owens-style country.

Mew - +/-

Dunno much about this group, other than that they are from Europe and play some sort of proggy-flavored pop-leaning art rock. I guess they have been getting a lot of critical acclaim in the last few years, but since I don't really follow newer music too closely I missed the boat. Hard to say what I think at this point, probably needs more listens to sink in. The singer has a high voice which might be an acquired taste for some.

The Sound - Two CD Boxsets

These two boxsets basically cover the band's entire discography. Although I would consider myself a big fan, I really only know their first two albums, but recently have been exploring some of their other stuff. I've been working my way slowly through these sets.

The Saints - I'm Stranded

Finally found a decent old copy of this, got it on sale even. This is a U.S. Sire pressing and is one of the greatest punk rock albums ever made, although I might give a slight edge to their second LP. All their first three LPs are great though, and you can even get a nice CD boxset of all of them for not too much money. These guys are as much high-energy rock 'n roll as punk, but have a certain edge to them that separates them from a lot of other stuff.

^ Great stuff man. I'm not familiar with any of those except the Saints. I need that I'm Stranded.

Right now...

Skinny Puppy - Mythmaker LP (Synthetic Symphony) 2007

^Industrial late period release from one of the early innovators. This makes me want to bust out KMFDM, Front 242, and maybe a little Nitzer Ebb next.

Modern Eon - Fiction Tales

One of the greatest and most overloooked post-punk LPs of the late 70s/early 80s. Never got legitimately reissued on CD either. Has a relaxed spacey vibe and the vocalist is somewhat unique for this type of music. Had to rebuy this because I've been without my old LP copy for over a decade...

@Rchecka,

I'm a big fan of Skinny Puppy, but their post-reunion recordings have done very little for me. I guess from my perspective, the band sort of ended after Last Rights. Kinda hard for them to top that album or Too Dark Park, which remains my favorite. I like pretty much all their old output though.

Re: Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb, I love those groups but don't see them as industrial in the strict sense - they were basically dance music/EBM. Really good for the style and definitely benchmarks, but EBM still.

Never liked KMFDM that much, they had a huge following though.

^A long time ago I made a mix tape (cassette) and it had pretty much all German bands and I mixed Skinny w/ old Front 242, Ebb, KMFDM, Kraftwerk, NEU!, etc. You're right they are different genres over all but they mixed surprisingly well.
