This. Plus the first song was called Freedom Flight. I had pretty high expectations that had very little chance of being met.

I went back and listened to a couple more songs - track 3 (Pan's Lament) was where it started getting interesting for me. If I ever run across it cheap in the wild I might pick it up.

^Well put man, I feel the same way.

I actually borrowed Black Pyramid from a record store I used to work with. I dropped a needle on that expecting nothing and the first song did nothing for me. One thing lead to another and I got distracted with something else and it played along anyway. By the time it got to the third track and fourth tracks when the sax player kicks in I was perking right up. From that point onward I found out it's really good.

So I put that in my "to buy" pile from that store when I returned the crate I was borrowing. I did some web work for the guy so we had a record borrow arrangement, and that allowed me to listen to and get dibs on a lot of records I would otherwise know nothing about. By the time the arrangement was over, this and many other records were in a huge "to buy" pile and I slowly bought the whole stack, including this one. Freddie

Looking back, some of the records from that stack are the coolest records I own cuz I got a chance to try before I bought. I'm an honest person, and he could have trusted me completely, but he meticulously cataloged everything in the crate before I brought it home, and after peeping the stuff for a week I'd go back with a "no thanks" pile and a buy pile. Doing it like that made me picky, cuz it was a bit overwhelming.

Sorry, I'm talking your ear off. worried

TLDR: Borrowed it. Liked it. Bought it. If you are on

Youtube start at track 3. Hang in there until track four cuz that's when it comes together.

^ I like that sense of discovery when I put on a piece of music for the first time, so when I shop for music I try not to listen to much of a record before I decide if I'm going to buy it. Sounds like you had a great arrangement where you got to enjoy playing something you've never heard before and then decide if you'll buy it.

It's kind of weird that streaming music just doesn't provide the same enjoyment - I can enjoy the music, but I think finding something great and committing to it by putting down some cash provides an extra splash of endorphins.

Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa

Atlantic 1972 promo

I had a damned long day, and the week's going to be hell - time to relax and this does it. Great, classic afro-soul-jazz disc. The title track's been sampled and "paraphrased" endlessly, but the rest of the album has a great groove to it, too. Dibango's catalog is pretty massive - I think I'll start keeping an eye out for other dics when I'm digging.

Hibiscus - great mellow groove

Doom - C.F.S.

Latest album from long running d-beat hardcore band out of the UK. I wouldn't say this is their greatest album, or even in my top 2 or 3 releases from them, but it doesn't tarnish their legacy one bit either.

Also available on LP from various distros...

The Estranged - S/T (2014)

One of the best albums out of last year that I've heard, this album is a big leap from their previous material IMHO. They do remind me of the Wipers a bit, but have their own thing going, great dark punk rock/post-punk hybrid. Hope they don't wait too long to put out another LP.
