The Jazz Messengers - Hard Bop LP

I've been wondering how the Impex stuff sounds. Since you speak highly of it, I'll definitely check this one out one day soon.

The Ornette Coleman Double Quartet - Free Jazz
original release by Atlantic, 1961 - this pressing by Atlantic/ORG Music, 2013

ORG pressing of this jazz classic. This was mastered by Bernie Grundman, and released on two LPs cut at 45rpm. The sound is phenomenal on here. For example, Eric Dolphy's bass clarinet sound like a foghorn cutting through a tornado of sound whenever he comes in.

With an all-star lineup that include Coleman, Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins, Ed Blackwell, and Scott LaFaro, there are very few early free jazz albums that can compare to this. A pure masterpiece.

I'm sure that sounds fantastic! I haven't tried any of the 45rpm Org issues yet, mainly due to the price. Definitely a groundbreaking album, though I admit I'm more likely to put on some of Ornette's more accessible work before and after this one.

Impex is a top notch label. I would put them up there with Analogue Productions and MOFI in terms of overall quality, and I might even say they're better in some ways. They don't release as much stuff as those labels and the overall QC seems to be tighter. Some of the pressing runs are also smaller. I've only tried a handful of the LP releases, but they also do SACD/CD versions. I'd love to see them do more of the Japanese jazz reissues on affordable 33RPM pressings. The 45RPM ones are usually quite expensive. I should've grabbed some of those during a short-lived sale several months ago.

Chip Wickham - Shamal Wind LP

Latest album from this UK contemporary jazz artist. Unlike his last one, which had a lot of 60s flavor, this one is more of a nod to the adventurous jazz of the early 70s. It's not free jazz or anything harsh, but the sound is expanded considerably over his last one. More atmosphere, some funk, even some influences from African and Arab music. It works well but it's subtle at times and deserves a few listens to sink in. If you're in the U.S. you can probably get this from Dusty Groove. If in Europe, try the label directly or maybe Juno Records.
