Art Blakey - Free for All LP

Maybe not one of Blakey's more popular 60s albums but it's a good one. If you like his stuff from this time period, look out for this record. My copy is 70s reissue, Van Gelder-mastered per the deadwax.

Art Blakey is dope !! I had a little Latin flavored jazz for the ride home today . Bumped Cal Tjader - Soul Burst.

Gotta cop this on vinyl !!

^I need to get some more Cal. The only stuff I have is the Latin Concert LP and a Stan Getz comp of 50s sessions that Cal played on.

Toshiko Akiyoshi Lew Tabackin Big Band - Kogun

RCA - 1974 Japan

Post Ellington big band that toured through the 1970s into the 1980s and ended up in residence in New York through 2003. Not a nostalgia act, Akiyoshi is an exceptional pianist, and a sophisticated composer, adept at blending styles from her native Japan with swinging post bop jazz (I wish I could find a video of the title song - it's a great example of her work). Her husband, Lew Tabackin, plays tenor and flute, and led the band. Both are still active in the jazz scene - Tabackin's latest credit was just last year.

No luck finding any other videos, but there are samples on this Amazon.jp page

^Where do you find this stuff?! I don't think I've seen a single jazz LP by a Japanese artist other some free-jazz/skronk type stuff that gets lumped in with the avant/noise section on rare occasion.
