Eric Dolphy - Fire Waltz 2xLP



Any interesting set here. This is probably a bit of sleeper nowadays too. This is a late 70s 2-fer reissue of two early 60s albums on Prestige that's actually not made up of proper Dolphy albums. Although Dolphy is featured heavily on these albums, they are actually albums by Ken McIntyre and Mal Waldron. Both albums are great, fairly lively and a little bit more accessible than Dolphy's solo work from around the same time. Definitely worth grabbing if you run into a copy.

Another great album that I am just now copping on vinyl ..

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme lp . I hate to say that I didn't own this on vinyl until today .. Such a great record .

^I honestly have never heard that album on vinyl either. Is that the current budget reissue? I have thought about trying one of those but the stories of bad copies out of the batch had scared me off. Might give it a try anyway. Coltrane had so many great albums, trying to collect everything, especially on vinyl, can end up being quite expensive. I don't have nearly as much Coltrane stuff as I would like.

Charles Mingus - Presents Charles Mingus LP



A pretty infamous Mingus album, regarded by some as his best. While I'm not sure I'd make that claim (I've not heard his whole massive catalog) it is a very good one. I remember when I first heard this back in college on CD, I really had no idea what to thing. The album has a bluesy undertone but is also fairly discordant and avant-garde at times. Another thing about the album that's interesting is that it's a fake live album. The album was recorded in the studio but Mingus reminds the "audience" at various times not to clink their glasses or ring the cash register. Thankfully there is no fake audience cheering or applause.

Of course the centerpiece is "Fables of Faubus", which he recorded here with the lyrics that Columbia Records would not allow.

This copy is a high quality mono reissue put out by Pure Pleasure Records. It was cut from the original master tapes and pressed at Pallas in Germany. It sounds fantastic of course. Watch out for versions of this LP out there that are either put out by shoddy labels or use a source derived from the stereo master tape. There stereo tape was screwed up in some way over the years and doesn't sound that great on later reissues.
