Midori Takada - Through the Looking Glass

Discogs Page

So here is an album that's getting a ton of press right now. This is one of those albums that gained in reputation online over the years, so now first pressings fetch $$$. Two labels partnered up this year to reissue it on both LP and CD. I opted for the CD because it was cheaper and it's very easy to screw up vinyl on delicate music like this.

Most of the press around this will throw around words like "ambient", "new age", or whatever, but just ignore all that. It's basically a minimalist percussion album in the avant classical tradition. If you dig this kind of stuff, it's definitely worth getting.

Krzysztof Penderecki - A Portrait Of Krzysztof Penderecki
EMI Classics, 2012

A 2 CD set of works from the brilliant Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. Penderecki has been prolific for in modern classical for 60+ years at this point. This set collects some of his major works from across his career.

His earlier work from the late 50s through the mid 70s falls into the category of avant-garde classical. Fair comparisons can be drawn to the work of contemporaries such as Stockhausen or Boulez. Around the middle of the 1970s, his compositions saw a dramatic shift to a focus on more melodic structures. There's ample writing available around the internet to cover his career, written by folks far more knowledgeable and eloquent than I am, so I won't make a fool of myself trying to analyze his work here. Suffice to say, Penderecki is a major talent in modern classical composition, and anyone interested should seek his work out as soon as possible.

Below is clip from the 2017 season of Twin Peaks where David Lynch made use of the extraordinary cinematic quality of Penderecki's most famous piece of music, "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima."

Another stunning piece of his work, written around 1972, "Cello Concerto No. 1."

I was just talking with someone about Penderecki the other day. I used to have a couple of his CDs and need to rebuy them.
