My interest in listening to grindcore comes and goes over time. Sometimes I really want to hear it, sometimes I just wonder why I ever bought so much of it in the first place.

I pulled out this CD the other day after not putting it on for about ten years or so, and it will likely be another decade before I listen to it again. While it's not bad as far as gore-grind goes, it is just...typical... There's really nothing special going on to make it stand out from so many other bands in the same genre. Samples about serial killers and rapists, blastbeats, lo-fi guitars, repetitive growling vocals, and lyrics straight out of the imagination of an edgy teenager. I should mention that I do own some other stuff by this band, as well as Rob Delevere's follow up project, Whore. So maybe I'm just not in the right mood for it at the moment, but it just kind of falls flat for me and doesn't hold up well 15 years after its release.

While I can respect the energy, aggression, and non-commercial nature of music like this, goregrind and its various spinoffs have never been my thing at all. Outside of early Carcass and maybe 1 or 2 other bands, it's just not my bag. Another thing: music like that in general works best in small doses IMHO. Getting through a 45+ minute album is a chore and it would be better suite to a 15-20 minute EP format.

Spiderpact - Goatspeed Into Magenta Vacuum
True Face Of Evil Records, 2008



Some very weird avant-garde black(ish) metal from Finland here. Led by a dude calling himself Juho Goatspeed, everything on this EP is slightly off-kilter in the best way possible. Some acoustic and electronic sounds mix with noisy tremolo picking and clean vocals that turn into harsh screams at a moments notice. And there's a hidden track at the end that's a nice piano ballad.

There's not a whole lot of information around the internet about this band, and I couldn't find a single bit of audio for this album anywhere, though I did find a couple of video clips on Vimeo that give some idea of what's happening with these guys.
