I bought this album on CD last year. I like it, but it seemed like fans were pretty divided on it. The ones that didn't like it seemed to expect that they were going to make another Ablaze or Hunger instead of just taking it for what it was.

Re: pic discs, I never buy them for sound quality reasons. It's nice to know they are getting better though.

One of the best albums to come out of the USBM scene that was thriving in the late 1990s - early 2000s. So dense and weirdly hypnotic that it almost comes across as a sort of perverse, claustrophobic ambient music.

Not my area of expertise at all but there's definitely a hypnotic effect to this style of black metal when the guitars are a bit buzzy and the vocals are pushed back in the mix. Need to investigate further.

Thoughts of Ionesco - A Skin Historic



These guys were a hardcore/noise rock band from Michigan around during the mid to late 90s. I saw the band a number of times then and the shows ranged from very good to "everything falling apart". I think a lot of people got burnt out on them at the time because they were the perennial opening band for national hardcore acts that came through town for awhile. I didn't really appreciate them while they were around even though I had their early records at the time.

Years later, I became interested in them again and started listening to their late period stuff that I missed the first time around. This was third LP and is a big improvement over the first two IMHO. Think mid-80s Black Flag meets early Swans and AmRep style noise rock or something. Anyway, I think this album has held up quite well and it's definitely worth seeking out if you don't have it.

Later on, the singer/guitarist/primary songwriter went on to more melodic rock-based bands. I actually liked some of those groups more than this band, but that's for another thread.
