Cough - Ritual Abuse
Relapse Records, 2010

This album is a crusty masterwork of modern doom. Fuzzed-out riffs and glacial tempos dominate, but the most interesting thing to me is the actual mix done by Sanford Parker. Parker has worked with Yob, Leviathan, Eyehategod, Voivod, and a bunch of others, so his credentials are solid. Here, he retains everything that makes Cough so overwhelmingly heavy, but achieves a great deal of separation in the process. None of the instruments or vocals are buried or crammed together in the soundstage. Everything is distinct and has a presence that makes the entire album sound spacious and menacing at the same time.

Obituary - The End Complete
original release by R/C Records (Roadrunner), 1992 this pressing by Metal Blade Records, 2014

This is Obituary's third release and one of my top five favorite death metal albums of all time. Unlike some other classics produced by Scott Burns, this has a monstrously thick and heavy sound.

Original US Roadrunner pressings aren't exactly common to find in good shape, but the recent reissue by Metal Blade pictured above delivers excellent sound, and can be found for $18-$25 brand new.
