This band gets a lot of flack nowadays for being too slick which I don't understand. I guess too polished for the tr00er than thou grind heads. I liked their debut album a lot when it came out. Right now I only have their 2xCD comp of EPs, demos, and compilation tracks. I need to go back and check out their other stuff. Their guitarist recorded a lot of bands while they were around also.

Underground Norwegian death metal circa 1995. This band is probably most famous for being a project involving Oystein Braun, who later formed the much more popular band Borknagar.

I wouldn't say this is my favorite death metal album by any stretch, but it is well done even if it doesn't really break any new ground. My copy is the recent reissue on Dark Symphonies, and I think they did a great job with this one. The entire album has been remixed from the multitracks. I'm usually not a fan of latter day remixes, but here, they include both the remix and the original mix of the entire album , so you can decide for yourself which you like better. Mastering is on point with dynamics intact, nothing like so many death metal albums and reissues these days.

Dream Death - Journey Into Mystery

Some people have tagged this group as a thrash band, but I don't think they have anything to do with thrash metal. At the time this band was formed and hashing out their sound on demos, extreme metal was in it's relative infancy, and bands like this didn't, and still don't, fit into a narrow category.

Dream Death have a lot more in common with bands like Celtic Frost and Necrophagia than any thrash band. Tempos are mostly slow and mid-paced, the overall vibe is doomy and vocals are much more clearly enunciated than bands that followed a few years later. Riffs and song structures are simple but effective. There are occasional bursts of speed, but they don't make up the core sound of the band.

My copy is the 2016 reissue on High Roller Records. The label should be praised for not mucking with the sound and keeping the dynamics of the recording intact. If only more labels would follow the same approach...

Spectral Voice - Eroded Corridors of Unbeing LP



Here is a metal album that's getting tons of hype right now. In this case, I think the hype is justified because this is a really good album. Musically it's a hybrid of death metal and doom metal that is very popular these days but it's so well put together I can forgive the lack of originality. There is a lot of personality in this band, which is what I look for in newer metal release. This one and the latest Venenum album are probably going to battle it out for my top metal release of the year.

The LP is sold out at the label but they are working on a repress. In the mean time you can get this on CD, cassette, or digital formats.

Summon - Dark Descent Of Fallen Souls
original CD release by Grinding Peace Records, 1997 - this LP pressed by Werewolf Records, 2017



I've had this on CD for about 20 years, but I was stoked when i saw that the Finnish label Werewolf Records was reissuing this album on vinyl for the first time ever.

Summon were a criminally underrated US black metal band out of Lansing, MI. They issued a string of killer albums up through 2005. This is my favorite of the lot. This new pressing sounds great, and should be mandatory listening for fans of USBM from this era.
