Damon Eliza Palermo - Clouds of David - Cassette Tape

Got this tape the other day. Full disclosure: I actually know the guy that made it, so I'm probably a bit biased. You may recognize his name from the indie rock band Mi Ami, he played drums in that band and they put out some records for Touch & Go and Thrill Jockey. In recent years he's been primarily known as a house music producer under the name Magic Touch and did some records on the 100% Silk label.

This isn't house or indie rock though, but an ambient album. Back when I knew him years ago his primary instrument was a sampler and he was doing different types of electronic music. This tape has the vibe of some of the music he was making back then so naturally I wanted to hear it, even though I'm almost two years late on this.

Most of it has a floaty, ethereal ambient sound but it is a bit rough around the edges in places, which I like.

I checked this out on Bandcamp just now, and I really dig this album. I tend to have times where I get into stuff that has a laid-back sound to it, and this seems just about right for those moments. Pretty unique, too, with a post-rock/new age feel. For some reason it actually reminds me of The Cocteau Twins a bit.

Some of the ethereal textures definitely make me think of the Cocteau Twins, though I'm not sure if guitar was used on the album or not. I'd like to see him record another ambient album in a similar style. I believe he has started doing ambient live shows and he has also done some radio shows where he DJs ambient and new age music.

I love RevCo and all those other great projects Al Jougensen was involved with back in the 90s. They always had the best cover songs, and the track "Gila Copter" that was on Linger Ficken' Good with this song was just excellent. Something about Timothy Leary being on the same record with these guys just seemed completely appropriate.
