The Mutton Birds - Salty

Second album from this 90s guitar pop band from New Zealand. Some amazing songwriting on display here. Probably all but forgotten these days. I think the singer, Don McGlashan, is still doing solo albums but I've not heard any of them.

I don't know how I missed out on these guys before now. Excellent stuff there. Another one I need to keep my eye out for.

Oh, don't worry. I only discovered them ten years ago through the Big Takeover magazine. Jack Rabid is always name-dropping them. I'm not even sure their albums were released in the U.S. during the 90s. They would've had a cult following then that probably didn't go beyond the college rock/indie crowd. My discs are all European/NZ/AU import copies and I don't think I've ever seen anything by them in a record store ever here. Their third album, Envy of Angels, is the band's masterpiece IMHO. Get that one first if you can. It was produced by Hugh Jones and sounds amazing. Some unbelievable songs on it too.

The Suspects - Voice Of America
original release by Torque Records, 1996 - this reissue by Grave Mistake Records / Six Feet Under Records, 2016

The Suspects were a DC punk band that first got together in 1993. Not following along with the rest of the emerging post-hardcore/proto-emo scene that was happening in the area at the time, these guys focused on straight up old school street punk, similar to what Rancid was doing on the west coast at the same time. They released a self-titled 7" EP in 1994 that is collected on the reissue in the photo above along with the 1995 full length album Voice Of America. There was another LP released in 1996, and a split 7" with Philadelphia's Violent Society in 1998. Both of those are well worth searching out along with this album.

Never heard of this band but those tracks sound pretty good.
