Recently…

Subtle ‎- For Hero : For Fool LP (Lex) 2006

^WTF did I buy this for? I think I bought it cuz I heard one good Subtle beat one time and it was on Lex so I took a gamble and bought it on a whim. Bad gamble. I don’t know if this can be called Hip Hop, it’s just too weird, and the production is all over the map in terms of switching up beats constantly. Worst LEX record I own. I endured it out of sheer curiosity but by the time I got to the second side I was thoroughly annoyed by the sing-songy backpackerisms on this. Some Anticon affiliates are interesting or at least tolerable, this isn’t one of them.

Little Brother – The Listening LP (ABB Records) 2003

^I coulda put this on P’s underappreciated Hip Hop albums thread. I think it wasn’t underappreciated when it came out, I remember the hype, but now I think it’s almost a bit of a forgotten classic. I haven’t played it in years so I figured I’d bust it out for the throw back vibes. It really is as relevant today as it was back then. This is Justice League’s finest MCs doing their finest work.

Gregory D & DJ Mannie Fresh - Call Somebody Else 12” (Yo! Records) 1990

^Another one of those “Call someone who cares” raps, I wonder if there are enough of those old school joints to make a mixtape that only has those types of songs. This one is pretty fun though Mannie Fresh was in his prime back in these days, this reminded me I gotta get back into seeking his wax.

Chad Jackson - Hear The Drummer (Get Wicked) 12” (ATCO/Big Wave) 1990

^I have always liked this easy to find instrumental. It’s boom bap, that’s why. And it’s got some staple beats pasted together nicely. This one could go on any Golden Era mixtape to force blend any 2 songs together, it’s almost as if it’s been built to be the glue that holds together a mix.

Jammin' Joe the Dominator - I'm Coming for it! 12” (Killer Kelley Records) 1988

^Oh Look, it’s Hip Hop Joe! LOL, just razzin you BM31, no hard feelings. I really ain’t mad at the term, I kinda like it actually. It’s way better than “your ordinary joe” I loathe that one LMAO.

Anywayz, yeah, this Joe is from Chicago, not the world’s best rapper by any means, a little old schoolish sounding for how late it is but it’s still dope in it’s own way. The scratching on the second track at the end is really tight, I wonder who that was. I might have to do a little research on this, but it doesn’t exist on Discogs so it’s probably hard to find anything out about.
