In general what is your opinion on the 40th Anniv. remixes? For awhile the original mixes seemed to be OOP and they were all you could get, but I've held off getting these remixes so far. What do you think is the most interesting of the batch?

Overall, I like the 40th anniversary mixes. Some are just cleaned up versions of the originals, some are radically different. They're worth hearing, just for the sake of comparison on a song by song basis.

The first album, Strange Days, and Waiting For The Sun have the most notable differences from the originals as far as having things present in the mix that weren't in the originals, but The Soft Parade and Morrison Hotel have a ton of detail in the mixes that tended to get buried before. L.A. Woman sounds good, but not so different that I would place it above the original.

If you really want to hear something wild, check out the Japanese SHM CDs of the 40th anniversary mixes. I'm not trying to start a drama thread about SHM's like the ones you'll see on the Hoffman forums, but these things have excellent mastering regardless of the merits (or lack thereof) of the actual disc manufacturing process. The US and EU versions sound blown out and redlined by comparison.

Double LP bootleg. The first disc has just the audio track from the "Feast Of Friends" movie. If you haven't seen the actual film, some of what's on here may not make much sense without the visual context.

The second record has several performances from TV appearances between 1967-1969, and a live version of the end that I believe is taken from a British broadcast. That cut is the real reason to own this album. There are some amazing extended musical sections in there that are some of the best of their kind.

I picked up this copy back in '84, I think. I see on Popsike that it's been sold recently on Ebay, so probably the best bet is to keep an eye out there for a copy. Look for anything listed as "TMOQ" or "not-TMOQ" instead of "bootleg" or "unofficial." Those listings are far less likely to be flagged or reported and taken down by Ebay.

There were two pressings of this by Towne Records, both released in 1981. The first one has generic looking labels with a name of Krieger and Assoc. on it. This is the second version that has three photos of Jim Morrison on the labels. The tracks and sound quality are identical between the two.

There is also another version that came out before this one (around 1980 I think) on the Amazing Kornyfone Record Label. That one is called "Down The Lights." The track listing is slightly different on that one, with one song from side 4 of the pressing above being moved to the end of side 3. Otherwise they are identical in sound. There was a second pressing of "Down The Lights" issued again in 1988 with different label art, but an identical track listing.
