RIDE - Waves [Radio 1 Sessions 1990-1994]

Saw RIDE recently and bought this disc at the merch table instead of a $30-40 T-Shirt. I had actually not heard these recordings until now, and they sound markedly different from the studio versions (not necessarily better or worse), so if you like RIDE, this is worth getting. They even do covers of Pale Saints and Dead Can Dance songs, which is pretty unexpected.

For vinyl freaks, there is a 2xLP edition of Nowhere coming soon with the tracks from the Fall and Today Forever EPs.

If they come to your town, make sure to go see them if you can.

^Great breakdown man. I love hearing feedback on live shows, there's no "setup" that beats the live show ever.

Glide (Australia) - Open Up and Croon CD

Greatly under-appreciated 90s Australian indie band, hardly known in the U.S. at all. Their sound touches on shoegaze and even janglepop at times but they're kind of hard to describe. If you like atmospheric guitar-based bands from the 80s and 90s with the occasional disturbing lyric, definitely check these guys out. Their stuff can be hard to obtain outside of Australia, but they did have one album with U.S. distribution.

Unfortunately the band ended because the singer/guitarist, William Arthur, died of a heroin overdose.

Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim) - African Marketplace

Elektra 1979

This is a fantastically diverse South African flavored jazz record. Compositions range from a beautifully melodic solo piano piece:

To a melancholy minor key dirge:

Through the urbane, funky groove of the penultimate track:

Galaxie 500 - Today

Aurora Records - 1988

Listening to Glide drove me to drop a needle on this old favorite. Classic 80's indie pop.

^I had to pull out my copy to that Galaxie 500 album to listen to later. It's been awhile since I put it on. Often I have a hard time deciding whether I like that one or On Fire better.

That jazz record looks/sounds interesting too. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.
