^Great info.

I was told by someone, (Can't recall who) that I simply must own Ultravox's first LP and I tried buying it a few times and was too slow on the draw.

Is that their best one or what do you know about that LM?

^It has been quite some time since I've heard that one. I don't recall being blown away by it. It's probably of some historical importance and of course I will get it on some format at some point to complete my collection of early Ultravox but I don't have it right now. I think most critics and fans would say HA! HA! HA! was the best early Ultravox had to offer. I have that on vinyl as well and my particular copy sounds great, cant remember if it's a US/UK/Canada pressing off hand. The CD reissue sounds very good though.

My personal opinion is that John Foxx's first two solo albums (Metamatic and the Garden) are better than anything by Ultravox. Not everyone will agree with this of course. Both of these have be reissued by Demon out of the UK semi-recently and I think some places like Amazon have them for under $25. Good copies of old pressings of those (esp. UK editions) are not easy to come by out in the wild in the states IME. FYI there are also some 12'' singles from those albums that would probably be up your alley I think...

The Stalin - Stop Jap CD

Old Japanese hardcore punk. Not nearly as wild and frantic as some later Japanese bands from the 80s and 90s, but this is still great stuff. I actually think their follow up, Mushi, is even better, but both albums are classics in my book. My copy is a legit Japanese CD I picked up awhile back that I remember being quite expensive. Watch out for boots of this stuff on both CD and vinyl! A lot of the bigger name or rarer/desirable Japanese punk related bands have been bootlegged at this point by dodgy outfits out of Europe and the U.S. and all bets are off W/R/T the quality and source used.

Dwight Yoakam - Guitar, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc.

Killer country record from an artist that pretty much did his own thing separate from the Nashville country establishment and had radio hits in the process. I actually think his first five albums are all very solid, but this is the one that seems to get the most attention for whatever reason. The sound is just as much rockabilly as it is traditional country. Interesting note: the album was originally issued as a 12'' EP in 1984 by an indie label before being expanded and reissued as an LP by a major a couple years later.

Martha and the Muffins - Danseparc

Fourth LP from this new-wave-ish group out of Canada. I really like this band and think they're very underrated. Also dig the female singer's unpretentious vocal style. This is probably the most dance-oriented out of their first four LPs. It even gets into some semi-tricky rhythms at times possibly reminiscent of what Talking Heads were doing around the same time. While not my favorite M+M album, it's worth picking up.
