Government Issue - Joy Ride

GIs second album (if you count the Boycott Staab 12''EP) and my second favorite of their discography (Favorite is the "You" LP). At this point, they were definitely still a hardcore band, but started incorporating a little bit of hard rock influence in the guitar riffs. It makes for a much catchier, better realized sound than their earliest work. There is also a little bit of humor here and there, which is good. My copy is an 80s pressing on Fountain of Youth/Dutch East India. I believe this was also reissued recently by Dr. Strange.

Grave Pleasures - Dreamcrash

This album is only available in the U.S. right now as a pricey import, but I managed to get my hands on a legal FLAC download of the album and have listened to it twice now.

Grave Pleasures is essentially the band formerly known as Beastmilk, with a slightly different lineup. Under that name they put out a great album of somewhat tongue-in-cheek retro-post-punk that seemed to get quite a bit of attention. I was a little late to the party, but I really liked that album and it grew on me more and more over several listens.

Now we have this new album, which shows the band operating at a much "bigger" level. Bigger recording budget, more complex songs, etc. and they are even on a major label at this point. I have a feeling that some fans are going to be let down by this album, simply because it doesn't repeat what they did on the first one. The camp factor is turned up a bit, and the band spends more time on slower tempos and less time on all-out driving sections and simple songs. This is a good record, but is probably going to require a bit more time investment depending on what your tastes are.

No video this time because the band has taken it down. Must be record label related issues. I think there are some soundclips at the links I posted.

@ Boombat, I'm a huge Jam fan as I'm sure you're aware. Didn't notice that but I'm sure there are traces of it there now that you mention it.

Yeah, I think we did have a convo about a jam review you did back on that other site (in the city was it?). Good example might be the 26 minute mark. Might just be me but I thought of from the floorboards up right away. Good track.

Now that you mention it, side 2 of the album has a bit of a Jam/Weller vibe in the guitar riffs. Maybe a very small hint of early Gang of Four as well.

Lindisfarne - Nicely Out Of Tune

1970 - Charisma UK

Debut album from Brit folk rockers in the vein of Fairport Convention and Fotheringay, with a bit of late British Invasion flavor thrown into the mix. They do some great harmonizing and the songs cover a nice range; beautiful ballads, boozy sing-alongs and Celtic tinged bar rockers are all represented.
