What is your favorite Tull album out of curiosity?

SW does some interesting remixes. I recently got his Tears For Fears and Yes remix box through HD Tracks. He seems to add more space between the instruments over the original mixes. Still working through the Yes stuff but these are an interesting listen, especially over headphones.

In no particular order, my personal favorites from Jethro Tull's catalog are probably Heavy Horses, Minstrel In The Gallery, A Passion Play, Songs From The Wood, Bursting Out (an all-time favorite live album for me), and Crest Of A Knave. I like pretty much everything they've put out, so it's hard to narrow it down much further.

I need to check out the SW remixes of Yes. I've heard positive things about them, even from the band and they are notoriously hard to please when it comes to other people messing with their music. I'll bump them a little higher up on my "Must pick up soon" list.

The third proper studio album from Phish, and the first that was released by Elektra. This record has some of the tracks that would become live stalwarts for the band, as they often expanded them into 30 minutes or more as they explored the possibilities offered up by the individual song structures.

As an interesting side note, the person whose image is superimposed on the orange in the cover art is Nector Rorris. He owned the club called Nectar's in Burlington, Vermont where Phish played frequently in their earlier days. The album is also dedicated to him.

You know, whenever I check out tracks by this band, I'm surprised at how jazzy they are. I'm gonna have to break down and buy some of their stuff next month probably.

There's a lot to unpack with this band. The studio albums are a good starting point, but they really take off in a live setting. I keep posting them here under "progressive rock" because I really don't know where else to put them. While the similarities with the Grateful Dead are obvious, I can't help but think of Frank Zappa when I hear them really let loose. I remember one interview I saw Zappa give many years ago where he talked about his live performances being special to him because they were one time only events. The songs may start off in familiar territory if you've heard the studio versions, but you just never know where they'll end up on the stage. In this day and age, Phish represent a totally unique experience. Just try to ignore the weird bullshit that comes from some of the fan base.
