I maintain that unless the singer does not gaze at his own shoes for the full duration of each and every live performance it's not real shoe gaze music. Even if it sounds like shoegaze, the act of gazing at shoes is the only acceptable determining factor. winking smiley

There are some genre label origins stories that are both entertaining and ridiculous if you really think about it. Some guy coined that term from, I dunno, Spin magazine or something and now we all still use it even though it's not really a thing you'd ever see. But there's no alternative label that works, so for better or for worse, we're kinda stuck with it. I like that musical sound of shoegaze (but usually in small doses only) and am pretty out of the loop myself in terms of the modern shoegaze groups.

So... I missed the point... winking smiley

On another note, I was a quite a fan of the whole thing way back when Rides 1st LP came out.
Here's a bit of Lush (another fave). Seeing this live and close up was amazing. It doesnt come across in the vid, but hearing the drums louder in the mix was on some kind of breakbeat tip :

^Lush is very good stuff.

RN...

Listening the the Numero Group reissue of..

Codeine - The White Birch 2LP (Numero) 2012 RE of 1993 Sub Pop

^First off I gotta say, Numero is always top notch quality pressings. But this is one of the few I rarely play from them because it's sooo slow. I think you could call it slowcore? Anyways, listening to this makes you feel like you are on codeine, which to me is not a good feeling. Kinda makes me wanna fall asleep listening to this. I don't know how you can physically play the drums this slow. Granted that's a skill, but you just wanna hear the snare snap but the drummer is on a smoke break out back in between each hit, it's that fucking slowwwwww. Then they have these stabs of loud guitar which save the album from an otherwise death by boredom.

So right now I am on the side B of a 2 LP set. I highly doubt I will be able to put the needle back down after this and get thru all 4 sides. I do not wanna fall asleep and this painfully slow shoegazer band is making me gaze at my own shoes.

Mind you, I have at least 60 Numero Group records and this is the only one I don't think I've ever been able to get thru even once. Unless I am literally on pain killers this is going back on the dusty old shelf.

@deathop, I'm a big fan of Lush. They are getting back together as you may know.

@rchecka, that Codeine record is a tortuously slow one to get through. I like the first one, Frigid Stars, more, it's slightly more upbeat.
