Aftermath - Eyes of Tomorrow CD



Now here is an interesting one. A progressive leaning, technical thrash metal band out of Chicago. They released two demos in the 80s but for whatever reason they didn't get around to a full length album until 1994. Needless to say that was way too late for this style of music, so I'm not surprised the band never became big. Some great riffs on this, interesting song structures, etc. The vocals are not a high point (some unnecessary effects used here and there), but don't detract from the music too much. Let's just say I've heard far worse vocalists in this type of music. Also, the dynamic range of my particular CD pressing (on Zoid/Thermometer Sound Surface) is amazing...more than many classical CDs I have. Also worth noting is that the label Shadow Kingdom Records reissued this last year in an expanded double CD/double LP format.

Long before metalcore became a godawful joke of a subgenre, you had bands like this that ushered in the wave of heavy metallic hardcore during the 90s and were doing something unique. Other bands I'd put into this category would be Starkweather, Acme, Integrity, Mayday, Ringworm, etc. As the 90s drew to a close, more and more rehash bands, or just outright shitty bands were coming on the scene. Gradually I lost interest and stopped following new hardcore bands altogether.

So what does this sound like? There are some chugging riffs, some Slayer-esque melodies, deep yelling vocals, and the occasional fast parts that sound like straightforward hardcore. Lyrics are mostly focused on dark topics, if the album title didn't clue you in. This was their second and best album. After this, the band put out two more great singles and called it quits. I think they still get together for the occasional reunion show (one of their guitarists died though) but aren't doing any new music. I'm not sure it would work out anyway, because this band is very much a 90s phenomenon IMHO.

I'd say that's pretty accurate. This is good stuff here. Much better than what has been coming out of this scene in the last 10-15 years for sure.
