I'm with you on the classic Metallica period being over at the end of the 80s. Although the Black album is regarded by many as a classic now, I never thought it was that great. A few months ago I grabbed a CD of the Black album for $5 from a big box store and was surprised how much I liked it. Not something I'll put on all that often and there are a few clunkers but it's really quite good in places, if inferior to what came before.

I never bothered listening to Load/ReLoad but I heard the radio songs and probably a good portion of the album at friend's houses and record stores at the time. Not really my thing either, perhaps I was too harsh but there are just too many other things vying for my time and attention at this point that I can't care too much. I feel that way about this album too. I probably liked the radio songs even less than the Load era stuff so I never bothered. Also agree that the documentary showed them in a less than positive light. The only good part was when they were auditioning bass players and Rob Trujillo starts rocking out.

Haven't heard the new one. People seem divided on it.

Overkill - The Years Of Decay
Megaforce Worldwide/Atlantic Records, 1989



I dug this CD out recently and listened to it for the first time in more than ten years. This is one of those albums I spent so much time with when it first came out that it seems like I can hear it without even playing it.

Every song here is solid, from the thrashier numbers like "Time To Kill" and "Elimination" to the more plodding, doom-influenced ones like "Skullkrusher" or the title track. While Overkill continues to release solid albums up to the present day, the records they put out between the Power In Black demo in 1983 and this one in '89 remain my personal favorites.

Nice pick. One of those bands I never got into but I'm interested in checking out now. I think a couple of their albums have been on my heavy metal wishlist for awhile, just haven't gotten around to buying them yet.

Thorr's Hammer - Dommedagsnatt
Original cassette released by Moribund, 1996 - this CD reissued by Southern Lord, 1998



The only album released by this band featuring the talents of Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley who would go on to form the mighty Sunn O))).

This is crushingly heavy doom, possibly heavier than even Sunn would become. One thing to check out here are the amazing vocals provided by Runhild Gammelsæter, who was a 17 year old exchange student at the time this was recorded. The band broke up after recording one demo tape and then this EP, all in a six week period, when she returned to Norway to continue her studies there. She eventually received a PhD in cell physiology, and currently sits on the board of directors of one of Norway's largest biotech firms, although she occasionally still records with the band Khlyst. Drummer Jamie Sykes went on to form Burning Witch.

There have also been a few pressings of this album to vinyl by Southern Lord, the last one coming in 2009.

I remember seeing ads and/or reading reviews for this a LONG time ago. Maybe Worm Gear zine or something? Don't remember. Anyway, I should check this out.
