The Criminale comps are tracks taken from the Flipper catalog and were put out on Penny records . Everything I can find about penny says it's an Italian label . Three of the volume had a made in Spain sticker inside the shrink and the other one said made in Germany .

That label I'm talking about plays all sorts of games to hide who they are. For awhile they were using the names Doxy, Lilith, and Mir (or MiruMir). As an example, when there was a dispute between Scientist and Greensleeves Records (still ongoing AFAIK), Scientist went through this label (calling themselves DubMir now) to reissue his Greensleeves-era albums on LP and CD. I bought some of the CDs, four or five of them, and they each had a different "made in _____" sticker on them denoting a different country to hide the true country of origin for these releases. I'm guessing it makes it harder to find these guys and shut them down. Who knows who is really behind the label.

For their LP releases they will often package things just like you showed with the LP + CD. I have a couple releases from them like that (definitely grey area stuff at best) and Forced Exposure seems to be the distribution arm in the U.S.

I can definitely see the similarities in the packaging on that Jorge Ben album .
I managed to sneak in a few records today ..

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On 10" single . There are actually three versions of What's Going On and the song God Is Love on here . There is the original 7" version . I like this mix as it is very drum heavy . Then there is a new mix with BJ The Chicago Kid . I never heard this dude and was worried this mix would come of something like when they took all the Tupac reject tracks and put them on a track with new artists . But the dude can sing and this version although not my favorite , isn't too bad . There is also the coffeehouse mix which is a stripped down unplugged sounding edit . It's pretty good !! God is love sounds really nice too . Both God Is Love and the 7" version of What's Going On are mono recordings .




Paris Smith's New Composers Ensemble - 53rd St. Ghost lp . After copping that Paris Smith album last week and giving it a good listen , I knew I needed more . I found this reissue and scooped it up . I know in my last post with one of his album I quoted the sticker on the shrink . I'm gonna have to do it again . This one says " A killer batch of modern spiritual soul jazz - with a classic sound .... It says more , but I will leave it at that . Usually when I read these comments , I tend to disagree , or at least have a hard time seeing the connection . Not in this case . I couldn't have said it any better . Although this album was recorded in the mid / late 90s , it truly sounds like it's straight out of the 70s underground . I'm digging this cat and hope I can find more of his albums ...

WOOOOOO that Marvin Gaye 10" is FIRE. I gotta have that one.
