^Nice RSD, and "Rough Guide" to Reggae is unstoppable too. Those Rough Guide books are great resources.

Last night...

Edenheight - You Do You and Peaceboy 7" (Breakin' Bread) 2012

^A couple of nice British funk forty-fives direct from this cool cat named Mr. Fantastic over at DWG. This is really nice soulful funk, the female vocalist is classy, almost the same style of soulful funk as Sharon Jones.

Thelonious Monk ‎– Monk. LP MONO (Columbia) 1964

^MONO! Man there is something about Mono records that makes you hear things that the stereo release never brought out of the music. Never sleep on MONO recordings, they are louder, tighter, and better in a lot of ways IMO. I don't have NEARLY enough Monk, this one reminded me of that. Fantastic Hard Bop here, a wonderful album.

Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire De Melody Nelson LP (Phillips) 1971 (2011 Reissue)

^Great recommendation from Jay Brown. I am well aware of Serge, but didn't have this until yesterday. First thing you hear when you drop a needle on it is a hip hop break. Sampled by numerous producers, this entire album is loaded with "Ah Ha" moments. This is easily the best Serge in my 4 album collection of his works.

Friends Of Dean Martinez - The Shadow Of Your Smile LP (Sub Pop) 1995

^5/5 rock album. Seriously. I have NEVER given a perfect score on a record before except for this one. File under: Mexican (or Latin?) Instrumental Rock that Quinton Tarantino would killl to put in his next soundtrack. Reminds me of the Desperado soundtrack one minute, and then fuzzy psych the next, then Latin jazz, then Texas rock, then rock-country, and so on. Doesn't stray too far from their unique sound yet still hops genres throughout the album. These musicians are so honed it's not even funny. This is a fairly rare record on Sub Pop Records (strangely enough) that I somehow weasled out of Wade's hands at Metrowax by trading a few Hip Hop records I had doubles of. So glad I got this now, it's my new favorite record.DJ

...and BTW, the CD of this is cheap at Discogs, the record isn't.

Interestingly enough I don't voluntarily get to listen to music that often as I am always exhausted by the time I get home. We usually listen to Lite fm at work which works fine for me -I get to hear my fav music from the 70's and 80's all day long...but as I am working on my project (which I will divulge soon )that involves hip-hop, I haven't been able to check out a lot of non hip-hop music. I may be late But I'm absolutely loving that dude/group Gotye....and the chick that sings on "Somebody that I used to know", Her name is Kimbra and I am totally obsessed with her.. "Settle Down" is on heavy rotation ...her sound is really cool, pop ,hint of soul, abstract rhythms and sounds,scatting...I dig it...
