Recently been bumping these nons… (Sorry for the long post, but again I got some catch up to do)
Spacek - Vintage Hi-Tech LP (Studio !K7) 2003
^Easily my favorite record from Spacek. Somehow I got this German pressing. The blurb sticker on the record says “The Radiohead of Soul” I guess that might work. It’s definitely nu soul, something I’m not overly familiar with as a genre, but it’s really great soul nonetheless. Spacek’s singing on this and production are really tight, and the last track is an absolute monster. Reminds me if Madlib and Erykah Badu got together and blazed some heady nugs before dropping a slow motion steamroller beat with half-timed singing.
Various – Someone Got Their Head Kicked In! LP (Better Youth Organization) 1982
^After I saw the punk documentary included in the “Let Them Know” punk box I knew I had to track this old punk compilation down, and luckily I found it real cheap on the other side of my state. Now I know why this got heralded as the punk comp standard, it’s at the peak years of BYO’s output. Every single artist on that label had beef with the world and I need to hear more about it. File under my new cherished punk comp, very educational.
MXPX – The Broken Bones 7” (A&M) 2000 and
Nashville Pussy - Kicked In The Teeth 7” (Snooch Pooch) 1998
^Keep the punk 7 inches coming! That “Broken Bones” seven is not as good as earlier MXPX, but still it’s seasoned sounding rockers belting out a few good tracks, so I can’t complain much. Still I’d prefer their 80s and 90s songs over all. That Nashville Pussy on the other hand is perdnt ner perfect punk music. It’s just as cool as it’s cover looks.
Gilles Peterson – Journeys By DJ CD Mix (Journeys By DJ) 1997
^The man, the myth, on what started out as a true DJ’s musical journey realized by Coldcut, went on to include a number of amazing DJs like Gilles Peterson. True to the form of the mix, Gilles almost seamlessly blends various special underappreciated songs in his own special way. This is one of many I have in this series of mixes and it’s one of the more timeless ones IMO. I got mad respect for this guy, his ear is honed.
Flaming Lips – Clouds Taste Metallic LP (Warner Brothers) 1995
^Flaming Lips completionism in full effect. Another one crossed off my “to-get” list. This one must be their hippy album, it’s almost Grateful Deadish in a way compared to their other albums. Not their best IMO, but still hearing it for the first time was an entertaining listen as always so it was money well spent.
David Lynch & Alan R. Splet – Eraserhead OST LP (Sacred Bones) 2012 Reissue of 1982 OG
^I’m really surprised I didn’t get nightmares last night after listening to this. As a huge David Lynch fan I’m ashamed to say I never caught this movie, which according to Jay Brown is Lynch’s weirdest movie ever. After listening to this ambient dark work I can only imagine how weird it is. There’s some movie dialog in this along with the dark, nonlinear, music textures and all of it is quite disturbing. Really there are some masterful ambient moods on this, but this isn’t the kind of album you’d bust out for a gathering of friends. You basically gotta be in your dark place to even bother listening to this. I’m guessing that Trent Reznor loves this. The packaging on this limited release reissue is HQ, verging on over the top packaging like so many of these limited reissues are. Can’t complain about this other than the price, I paid too much, but it’ll find a nice home with my other weird-ass ambient records.
