Merel - Merel 7"




Shotmaker/Maximillian Colby - Split LP

I came across this 7" and split LP over the last couple of weeks at my local record store, both for reasonable prices. All three were early-to-mid '90s hardcore bands that get tagged as "emo" quite often. If you dig around the lovitt records BandCamp page, you should come across the equally awesome post-hardcore band Sleepytime Trio, which were made up of former Max Colby members.

I liked all three bands during the 90s but haven't listened to them in years other than Shotmaker. Merely had a discography CD on Gern Blandsten, way OOP now. Some members of STT IIRC were also in Engine Down. Shotmaker spun off into Three Penny Opera and another band I'm forgetting now.

I'd say Shotmaker is my favorite of the three. I recently grabbed their 2CD discography set off of discogs. For some reason that release goes for much more (about $30-40) than music from other '90s hardcore bands.

I had actually never heard of Merel before I came across the 7". It was labelled as "Emo/Hardcore" in the store, and when I googled them, I read that they were from the Northeast like a lot of other awesome bands, so I figured it was right up my alley.

Yeah, Shotmaker's stuff has held up really well. I have that Discography set as well. Unfortunately some of the tracks on it were mastered from vinyl as the master tapes were lost or whatever. That seems to happen a lot with DIY hardcore bands for some reason. Bands - take care of your masters!

It's funny how some 90s hardcore stuff has shot up in value and other stuff has not. I guess you can blame internet hype for that. I remember selling off a whole bunch of 7''s and LPs in the early 2000s - all 90s DIY hardcore. I wish I'd kept some of it but some of it I don't really miss. A few of those records are probably worth a few bucks now.

This is the first time I've heard either of these. Both are good stuff. I'm definitely going to track the 7" down. I really dig the sound on that.
