^That cover looks like an ad for Hypercolor t-shirts. Anyway, I didn't know who McGuire was so I look this up, seems he was in the band Emeralds. I have one of their tapes from awhile back but was never blown away by it (they got a ton of hype around the time). This sounds interesting though. I definitely hear some traces of Gottsching and maybe even some Fripp there.

Dead Coast - Shambolic
Greenway Records, 2016

Some very cool old school surf/psych here. This album sounds like it came out of 1968. The twangy guitars and laconic vocals are a great mix for my taste. This band is definitely going for a retro vibe, and they nailed it in my opinion.

Never heard of this band, sounds interesting though. I like how they changed things up a little across the first few tracks.

Bobby Beausoleil - Lucifer Rising
The Ajna Offensive, 2016

I'm putting this one here because it definitely fits under the "outsider" and psychedelic categories. The history of the Kenneth Anger film is convoluted to say the least, so I'll just leave that part out and get into the music. The LP in the photo is a new pressing that just came out last week.

Beausoleil is of course the former cohort of Charles Manson. He is currently serving life in prison for the murder of Gary Hinman back in 1969. According to Beausoleil, some of the themes on this album date back to '67. The recording here was done with the band (The Freedom Orchestra) that he put together in prison, even building some of the electronics in the prison workshop.

Regardless of my personal opinion of him and his actions, this is exceptional music. Spacey, drifting guitar and synth lines mix with drumming that wouldn't sound out of place on one of the early Can albums. I would go so far as to compare this to pre-Dark Side Floyd at moments.

If anyone is interested, you can read some of Beausoleil's own words about this on his website here
