QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Phish - It Elektra, 2004 Looks like a fairly big budget production there. I like their version of "Rock 'n Roll", pretty faithful to the original.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Gillan - Future Shock original release by Virgin, 1981 - this CD by Demon Music Group, 2015 You know, I really like the Gillan era of Deep Purple but I've never checked out any of his other projects. Would you say this is the best Gillan album? That track sounded great.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Grateful Dead - Wake Of The Flood originally released by Grateful Dead Records, 1973 - this pressing by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, 2011 I like the jazzy guitar on the first track you posted. I keep saying this but I need to block out some time to check out some of the Dead's key studio albums and decide what to buy.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Phish - Rift original release by Elektra, 1993 - this pressing by Jemp Records, 2015 I gotta admit, I never really listened to this band because I probably harbor negative stereotypes based on some of their fans I encountered back in college. I checked out a couple of those songs you posted and they're not bad at all. Probably something I need to give a propby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa The Doors - Waiting For The Sun original release by Elektra, 1968 - this promo CD by Rhino / Elektra / Doors Music Company, 2007 In general what is your opinion on the 40th Anniv. remixes? For awhile the original mixes seemed to be OOP and they were all you could get, but I've held off getting these remixes so far. QuoteGordon Rekcikssa The Doors - Strange Days original release by Elektra, 1967 - this CD by Elektra / Rhino Records / Doors Music Co., 2017 I need to get this one eventually. Probably my favorite studio album from them. I was able to grab the Mono RSD LP from a few years ago but I'd like to have the mono on CD as well. I'd appreciate it if more labels would release 60s stuff witby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Shelleyan Orphan - Century Flower LP I've never heard this before, but I really dig that song you posted. One more thing to put on the list of albums to keep an eye out for. Both that one and their first I paid less than $5 for in excellent condition. One was even a promo. U.S. pressings shouldn't be too hard to find.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa There is so much good jazz coming out these days, I think eventually this era may be remembered as a new "Golden Age" for the genre. This album right here is a perfect example of why. The UK scene seems especially vibrant. If I had more time and money I'd follow it more closely. I'm sure there is so much good stuff I'm missing out on. I try to grby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Torch Runner - Endless Nothing Southern Lord, 2014 Not familiar but the first couple tracks sound pretty intense. Reminds me of something from the 90s I can't put my finger on but this is more metallic and distorted sounding. I should pay more attention to the new stuff SL is putting out.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Shelleyan Orphan - Century Flower LP Late 80s ethereal pop with dual male/female vocals, primarily based on folk music. You may know the female vocalist from This Mortal Coil's "Blood" album. Both this album and their first are quite good and can be picked up at very reasonable prices. I really dig this sort of sound, but it might be too lightweight for some tastes. Chip Wickham - Shamal Wind LP Latest album from this UK contemporary jazz artist. Unlike his last one, which had a lot of 60s flavor, this one is more of a nod to the adventurous jazz of the early 70s. It's not free jazz or anything harsh, but the sound is expanded considerably over his last one. More atmosphere, some funk, even some influences from African and Arab music. It works weby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa The Jazz Messengers - Hard Bop LP I've been wondering how the Impex stuff sounds. Since you speak highly of it, I'll definitely check this one out one day soon. Impex is a top notch label. I would put them up there with Analogue Productions and MOFI in terms of overall quality, and I might even say they're better in some ways. They don't releaseby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Gordon, I'm glad you posted this thread. I like the Doors a lot, but my collection is very small and simple. I have the six main albums on the '99 HDCD remasters and a couple other CD versions. For vinyl I just have a few of the Rhino reissues from a few years back. If money was no object I'd buy that box set of 45RPM reissues - I'm sure that sounds amazing. QuoteGordon Rekcikssa The Ornette Coleman Double Quartet - Free Jazz original release by Atlantic, 1961 - this pressing by Atlantic/ORG Music, 2013 I'm sure that sounds fantastic! I haven't tried any of the 45rpm Org issues yet, mainly due to the price. Definitely a groundbreaking album, though I admit I'm more likely to put on some of Ornette's more accessible work befoby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^I checked out the first couple songs and it didn't sound bad at all. Astbury seems to be restraining his vibrato and his voice generally a bit to fit the songs. FWIW I like Astbury and the Cult but I was hugely skeptical when I heard about him performing with any version of the Doors. I'll have to check this out eventually, but my live Doors collection is non-existent right now so therby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quoterchecka I love Blakey so much. I know very little other than his heavy hitters but they made quite the impression on me. I'm pretty much in the same boat. Most of my Blakey collection is from his 60s Blue Note era. His earlier recordings are definitely underrated IMHO. I haven't heard anything from the 70s but there are some records of his from that era that are killer accordingby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Recently I acquired a new cartridge and needed a spare headshell to mount it to my JVC turntable (see above). My stock headshell is around 7g, so I was searching for something in the 7-10g range that would work well with my tonearm and the cartridge. After looking around I decided to try this headshell, as the idea of mounting the cartridge from the bottom was very intriguing to me. Now, I knby LionsMouth - Turntable Help and Technical Questions
Dark Circles actually reminds me a bit of these older bands: Sadly I sold off my copy of that 2x7'' many years ago. Used to be a favorite of mine back in the 90s. There is also a discography CD I meant to get at some point but it's OOP now and going for high-ish prices. These guys were (unfairly, IMHO) ragged on as as a His Hero Is Gone ripoff (a band I love), but Iby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Sidewinders - Witchdoctor LP Late 80s college rock from Tucson, Arizona. This was their second LP and seems to be something of a cult favorite in certain circles. The sound is similar to other American jangly guitar type bands from the era (e.g. Miracle Legion, Dumptruck, Guadalcanal Diary, etc.), but this band cranks up the energy and aggression a bit more often. There are also some deserby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Jazz Messengers - Hard Bop LP Early work from Art Blakey's group, before he took top billing. While it doesn't have sparks flying like some of his records from a bit later, this is a very good album well worth getting if you like late 50s hard bop. My copy is a stellar audiophile reissue from the Impex label. They did a fantastic job with this one. Discogsby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Love and Money - Strange Kind of Love CD Late 80s sophistipop from Scotland. This band has ex-members of the jangle pop, Orange Juice-esque group, Friends Again, but really sounds nothing like them. Instead there's a bit of blue eyed soul, some lite-funk, and some smooth rock/pop sounds. There is a slight dark edqe to some of the music which I like. The overall vibe isn't quite aby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quotewhyaduck I didn't know Electrifying Mojo's backstory - just read up on him. Spotify's great, but programming driven by someone with great taste can't be replaced by algorithms. I need to find something to replace that. Very true. I miss 90s college radio a lot. Nowadays most college stations are totally commercialized and have little or no independence w/r/t programmingby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quotewhyaduck Joe Simon - Drowning in the Sea of Love Spring Records - US, 1972 Not familiar with this at all, but it sounds quite good. I should buy more Philly soul stuff - my knowledge of it is fairly limited.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning LP An iconic underground band, but one I will admit to not hearing until very recently. Always kept my eye out for their stuff but never came across any of it, or at least, not at the prices I was willing to pay. It's a weird album but enjoyable. At this point the band had "merged" with the German band Slapp Happy, so there are a lot of femaby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Radio Birdman - Self-Titled Boxset One of the cornerstones of Australian punk rock, the box compiles pretty much everything this band recorded in the late 70s prior to their reunion/comeback stuff. If you're not familiar with them, they put a pretty heavy emphasis on the "rock" aspect of punk rock, with influences from the MC5, Stooges, early Blue Oyster Cult, and maybe evenby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quotewhyaduck ^Agreed - I enjoy surprises like that. Television - Adventure Elektra - USA, 1978 Marquee Moon's the more influential album, but I really enjoy the laid back, melodic feel of Adventure. I think Carried Away is absolutely lovely and lyrical - it's my favorite track from this album. A very underrated album IMHO. It's also a lot easier to find good early presby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Boys - Alternative Chartbusters LP Never thought I'd own a copy of this on LP, as it's not something that turns up often in shops and I never felt like ordering a copy from Europe and taking my chances on condition. One day I walked into a local shop and it just happened to be there. This is a UK first pressing of the second and best album from this punk rock/power pop band fby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I never had this, just the CD version on "Rich Man's 8 Track Tape". Gotta love how Albini purposely left off a track to spite CD buyers. I've heard good things about the latest reissue of this - maybe I should pick it up. Re: the MFA, it looks like that had to do with Electrifying Mojo. Quotewhyaduck Reckless stores the discs separately from the covers - I really didn't want to spend the time digging, go to the counter, look over the vinyl, rinse, repeat, so I was only there 10 minutes or so. The selection looked like it was pretty well picked over, but I think it would be a decent place to grab common stuff.
