Sun Ra - Super Sonic Jazz

One of his more mellow/accessible albums to be sure. Not much else to say other than I dig it.

I can't say enough good things about these guys. I like pretty much everything they have ever done.

Welcome to the forum Boombat! Who are you referring to, Gangs? If so what else is good?

Sun Ra - Super Sonic Jazz

^Nice one, as you probably know I'm a big Sun Ra fan and you are right about accessible, especially compared to his harder more free jazz stuff. It's very early for him (1950s stuff) so I think he was just starting to show signs of his upcoming signature "joyful noise" sound.

Yeah, I remember your big Sun Ra post. I've only got a handful of albums on vinyl and CD. I'm kinda holding off for a bit on buying more Sun Ra stuff because I want the official reissue campaign to get going, don't really want to shell out for gray area stuff going forward.

Honestly there's not a lot that's "bootleggy" and obvious "unofficial" stuff of his out there, much of it is official or semi-official if there is such a thing. He pressed a great deal of his own records on handmade jackets and if you get those you are extremely lucky, you got a lot of money, and you are likely to have the audio flaws that come with homemade budget pressings. I have many of his albums and I think only one is a first pressing. The rest are reissues and sound great as well. Much of his music is licensed and reissued by umpteen different reissue labels and so far I've had no qualms on sound quality from any of them.

For Sun Ra album information, obviously you have Discogs as a reference, but not so obvious is this older and much more thorough Sun Ra discography. With roughly 1000 albums he made over the years I just decided to jump in the water head first and go where the wind blows me. I eventually got around to the perfect starter album "Lanquidity" which is one of his more tame and arguably most beautiful jazz pieces and I'd recommend that to anyone who's an advanced collector of his works or a total newb.

You got me talking about Sun Ra now, and I could go on forever, so I better just end it there. nerd
