^ Good stuff Seith. thumbs up

I only have one Paul Desmond album on CTI, A Day in a Life. The Beatles cover song is a good one but the rest of that album is eh.

I don't know Paul Desmond's solo work that well, but his "Take Ten" album is very good and well worth getting. Re: CTI, some amazing records on that label but a fair amount of not so hot stuff also.

Picked up a copy of Paul Desmond's "Skylark" from the local thrift:

I dig Paul Desmond, and this may be his best album from the 70s. He had a such great tone and his counterpoint playing was really unique. There are two albums he recorded with Gerry Mulligan that are worth hearing if you ever see them, especially Two Of A Mind. Great cool jazz.

Jan Garbarek - Dis LP

I don't know much about Garbarek, but I do have a couple of his records. Garbarek is a sax player from Norway with a huge discography including solo albums and sessions with other musicians as well. Much of his work was released on the ECM label, which has legendary status even if it is not so trendy at the moment.

I like this one more than the other Garbarek LP I have, which is more accessible and more critically acclaimed. This one is spare (accompanied only by Ralph Towner on guitar) and takes a bit more effort to get into, however, I find it much more satisfying and rewarding overall.

You can probably pick this up cheap if you see it and it's well worth buying IMHO.

Hiro Yanagida - Hirocosmos
original Japanese release by CBS/Sony, 1973 - this CD by Showboat, 2004

Hiro Yanagida started out in the "Group Sounds" scene with The Floral in Japan during the 60s, and went on to play with the much more successful band Apryl Fool before embarking on a solo career as a keyboardist and contributing to a good number of seminal Japanese psych projects in the early 70s. This was his fifth solo LP in three years, and can be considerably difficult to find, although it's well worth the effort to do.

Although many people would file this under Progressive Rock, this particular album is far jazzier than some of his others and seems to fit better in this thread to my ears.
