Mike Nock Quartet - In Out And Around
Timeless Records, 1979

Gorgeous straight ahead jazz from pianist Mike Nock, along with some soulful sax playing by Mike Brecker. The real star for me here is Al Foster's tasteful drumming, though. He's never overbearing or trying to intrude on the melodies, just providing some solid rhythm and cool fills. This is good stuff for a solitary afternoon listen.

^That sounds great. Almost ECM-ish.

Instagon - 666
Thee Instagon Foundation, 2014

Instagon are a free jazz outfit from Sacramento. This is a recording of their 666th show from October 25, 2014. It's reminiscent of the kind of sound that Miles Davis' bands put out in the late 60s - early 70s. There's not a decent video of the album that I could find on YouTube, but below are some clips of an earlier show where Greg Ginn joined them for some improv. These guys have an extensive catalog of recordings, some of which you can find on their Bandcamp page that I'll link below.

Milt Jackson - The Prophet Speaks
Qwest Records, 1996

I'm a huge fan of Milt Jackson, even in his later years. This album puts him together with some great modern players, notably Joshua Redman who lays down some soulful, tasty solos on several tracks. The ever-consistent Billy Higgins also adds some highlights with his subdued drumming. Joe Williams is along for the ride too, providing vocals on three of the tracks.
