Rchecka,

I can be quite "rock snobbish" as well and avoided Elvis for all the reasons you mentioned, just came off as corny to me more than anything.

My opinion on a lot of stuff has changed over time, including the Beatles and even stuff like Frank Sinatra and Dusty Springfield.

I like a lot of different stuff nowadays and have a much more open approach to music than I did when I was younger.

I still can't stand certain things though, namely the band Rush, or newer styles of metal where they play 8 and 9 string guitars and it just sounds like shitty muddy mosh metal or whatever. I could go on all day.

^I hear exactly what you are saying. Certain people just can't stand certain artists for personal taste reasons and they aren't any more wrong than the guy who loves them. That said, you can take it like a man when I say I don't like Elvis, others get defensive and angry (ahem, reddit) and try to cram it down your throat regardless of your negative stance as if they talking about it will instantly cause a 180 opinion change. Then when the negative opinion is reasserted the insults and name-calling begins. Personally I think it's so pathetic when people just cannot accept negative opinions on an artist. You are the opposite of that, we can have a normal adult conversation about the positives and negatives and agreements AND disagreements are expected.

Reality: You can't have good music if there is no bad music. What's bad is subjective, but there must be bad.

...and yes, my mind has been changed many times on artists I formerly disliked and saw in a new light that made me appreciate them, or at least, that small section in their career. I don't hate the Beatles, I dislike their voices frankly, and it's not my kind of music, but it is some of the best music ever written. So what, just cuz I don't like them am I going to argue with the rest of the world on that just cuz they ain't my thing?

With Elvis, I think the world kind of just had a giant infatuation with his aura and the world, overall, is wrong about him being so great, but whatever, I'm not changing minds.

So yeah, I'm sure there's some Elvis songs I'd like, but he's at the dead bottom of a huge to-get list in my book. I'd rather buy that Chameleons joint you posted.

@Rchecka, haven't heard White Zombie in years. I think the only thing I ever owned was a boot CD that had their first two (and very hard to find) albums. I should try to listen to that soon. Apparently the first album was a big favorite of Kurt Cobain's.

Two hardcore/punk-ish bands that are pretty much at polar opposites of the spectrum.

Negative Approach, which I'm sure everyone has heard of by now, were an early 80s band from Detroit that were part of the early Touch and Go scene with bands like the Necros, Meatmen, Die Kreuzen, etc. This is their discography CD, which I've had to buy a few times for various reasons. Classic stuff, though I could probably do without some of the badly recorded live tracks at the end of the disc.

Ruin were from Philly and were/are much more obscure. I've been trying to hunt down this CD since the 90s...it was hard to find even then. I guess they were one of the first bands to have an artsy take on hardcore and use on-stage gimmicks and such. Their sound is pretty tough to describe. If you are looking for vinyl, the first LP, "He-Ho" is definitely the one to look for. I used to have Fiat Lux on vinyl years ago and never really warmed up to it. We'll see if I like it more this time around.

Two more great selections LionsMouth !!! I have been listening to some hardcore lately too.

From Ashes Rise - Discography ( I've always called this album "Concrete And Steel" though ).
These guys were originally from Nashville and I used to see them play about once a month . Then they relocated to Portland Oregonsad smiley
