Last night...

Roscoe Mitchell Sextet - Sound LP (Delmark Records) 1966

^Don't you just love spotting stuff like this out in the wild? Found it locally cheap, it's really cool free jazz. If you are familiar with Sun Ra's style you have a general idea of how wild and over the top freestyle he can get, well this is like that in the broadest sense but as you can imagine with that many variables quite different.

2 songs on the first side and one long one on the second side. Again, not too different from Sun Ra's typical track layout as he often has one long song filling up a side. But this guy's an Alto Sax and Clarinet and Recorder player, so unlike Sonny banging on organ keys, this guy is spitting all over his reeds.

Lots of dynamic range, from the crazy loud moments, to the quiet weird moments, like a roller coaster of emotions. Therefore you gotta be in the right mood to listen to this very advanced sounding free jazz.

I swear to God this guy took his reed out of his clarinet and used it to make quiet duck farts and then shoved it back into his instrument to blast some peak joyful noise shit. That was strange but cool, I didn't know duck farts could be cool but I learned something last night, they can.

Most people really don't know what to do with Free Jazz, and that's why I got this for so cheap. It freaks out most people, they can't bear it for more than a few seconds. It's so non linear and seemingly chaotic, but it's purpose is to be the opposite of your average predictable head nodding jazz music. In a way it's more like audio art, you have to observe it and look for the order amidst the chaos. It's there, and when you find it, it clicks. Like all art, when it does click, it's a personal thing.

Here you can listen to his opening track titled "Ornette" which I'm guessing is a nod to Mr Coleman.

Only listen if you are feeling curious, moody and brave. Don't listen to this at work or your boss will think you are on acid.

Interesting pick. A lot of that Art Ensemble of Chicago related stuff is still in print via cheap vinyl reissues through Scorpio. I would've been really into this about 15 or so years ago. I was just getting into jazz and gravitated to a lot of avant/noisy sounding stuff because I was coming from a punk/metal/hardcore background. Nowadays I have settled into more melodic jazz, but I still pull out the "freakout" stuff occasionally.

This used to a be a favorite of mine, check it out:

Cannonball Adderley - Spontaneous Combustion - The Savoy Sessions 2xLP

Do you ever have those experiences where you are looking for a certain album and don't realize you have it already? I got this set awhile ago, and like other sets in the series, it is marketed as a "session" comp. This one is really a comp of two albums, but unless you carefully check the tracklist or the fine print where it says "Previously Issued On Savoy 12017 And 12018" you wouldn't know that. The albums in question are "Bohemia After Dark" and "Presenting Cannon Ball".

I can now cross the former off my wantlist since it's in this set. Anyway, these Savoy comps from the 70s/80s are worth grabbing if you find them. Very good sound, not expensive.
